They're saying smoking pot causes schizophrenia. That's supposed to be the worst and most debilitating of all mental illnesses where you can't tell what's real and what isn't. I know tendency toward schizophrenia runs in families and i've always read that it manifests after a combination of things including environmental factors. That it could be caused by deprivation in the womb, viruses, even a parasite that settles in the human brain associated with and spread by cats (those rumors about crazy cat lady yikes!!!)

I have a tendency to believe this study may be leading to false conclusions because troubled people are more inclined to smoke pot than those who are content with life. I think their subject base is already more likely to develop schizophrenia.

  3. so basically what Queen is saying is that pot doesn't make you crazy, but that you have to be wack in the head in order to smoke pot in the first place! ;)

    hmm...which is worse.......

  6. Is that their new spin on the "war against drugs"? They already used that in the 50s I think... "If you smoke pot, you will go INSANE!!!" Please. These types of studies are funded by the anti-pot associations and always twisted into a scare tactic aimed at the uninformed, which unfortunately, is also the vast majority.

""If you compare other substances like alcohol or tobacco it may not be as harmful, but what we are saying is neither is it completely safe," Zammit said in a telephone interview."

Well at least they finally admit that pot is less lethal than tobacco and alcohol. At least some truthful information is starting to get around. I absolutely agree that smoking pot couldn't possibly be *good* for you, you are still inhaling smoke. But all of these wild claims based on biased research funded by sources against the substance in question are entirely unreliable.

People have been using the stuff for centuries, nobody has ever died from it, and new studies even hint towards it actually preventing cancer.

So why is it still illegal? Why can the government continue to refuse studies about it? The economical impacts legalizing marijuana would have on the bigger corporations alone is motivation enough for them to control information and keep people thinking marijuana is bad because...well, because the "above the influence" commercial influenced them, which ironically in itself is a blind influence.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not playing the hippie against any form of corporate establishment. Marijuana is in a transitional period right now. In 10 years the stuff will be legal. Well, I guess that depends largely on how willing the public is to accept new ideas that may contradict the earlier "indoctrinated" ones. The newer generations should have less trouble with this. The freedom of information the internet and multiple other factors provide nowadays that wasn't so mainstream 10-15 years ago really is a wonderful thing. When people are exposed to unbiased information, they're more likely to make the rational conclusion themselves, rather than have it spoon fed to them.

Perhaps this schizophrenia they are trying to link marijuana to is indeed a result of the paranoia/stress that the user went through knowing what happens if they get caught. They aren't hurting anybody, or trespassing on anyone's civil liberties, but they'll be persecuted ruthlessly regardless. So who is to say this elevated level of schizophrenia in pot users, assuming it is true, isn't related to the negative spin the media puts on marijuana and its users, essentially dubbing otherwise upstanding citizens as criminals.

Maybe they did indeed go insane. But I doubt the drug itself had anything to do with it.

Influence is a powerful thing isn't it?

  9. I agree with much of what Kai said for the most part, but I think that the major player in a world of legalized marijuana would probably end up being the tobacco companies, and if they weren't able to sink their teeth into the market first.. then they would lobby and try to play the role of the "angels" attempting to save the country from his "Evil Drug" even though the product that they've been selling for ages now is causing the slow death and decay of thousands every day (Ironic don't you think?). They would surly want to make sure we don't give up their habit, for another.

Don't get me wrong though, i'm not pro-marijuana in anyway shape or form, I just believe that all information about anything should be free to everyone, and that it shouldn't be kept "locked up".

  10. Exactly. Freedom of information is the one wildcard of recent generations that will hopefully influence some change in the coming years. Tobacco companies are one of many who oppose the legalization marijuana. Chemical companies, paper companies, pharmaceutical companies, clothes companies, cotton farmers, the list goes on.

If you want to learn more about why the drug is still illegal, check this video..er..audio clip out.

One thing about FACTS.....they aren't allowed in emotional debates!!

The gun debate is clear evidence of this. It doesn't matter that the object is not the cause, but the person who uses the object is the cause, because we can't outlaw or ban people outright.

We can lock up criminals. How do you make criminals? Pass laws that make the objects they use, even if they aren't used for criminal activity, illegal.

The best way to demonize something? Simply say "It's for the children". "We want to ban guns to protect the children." "We have made a plant illegal to protect the children".

A simple plant....SCOURGE OF THE COUNTRY!!

It's a PLANT. Man had NOTHING to do with this thing. Mother Nature made it. If you can't trust Mother Nature, who can you trust?? Well, She can't always be trusted, as She feels HUMANS are the scourge of the planet!!

The only reason people die over marijuana is because it is illegal. Most of the other illegal drugs have human interaction to make them what they are.

Magic mushrooms are naturally made...they should be legal too!! Another simple plant...well...fungus. Yet perfectly natural, no human interaction needed to be grown...just some cows. We didn't create cows.

Seems the snack food companies should be in the fight to legalize Miss Mary Jane....they would certainly benefit!! But if they did, the blissninnies would be all over them saying they are EVIL!!

Those who hate seeing others having fun seem to rule this Country. And that is a shame.

    As John Stossel would say...

    "Give Me A Break".

  12. as soon as tobacco is outlawed the tobacco companies will be behind trying to legalize dope...pot...the ganja...whatever...

there was this great series on the history channel...oh god what was it called..."dope..the history" or some such thing...it was actually quite informative...like why they originally out lawed herioin...and showed...with some pretty good evidence that the criminalizing of it did indeed lead to more criminal behavior...i wish i could remember the name and what all was presented to me...however..i have slept since then and due to my misspent youth...my memory retention is for shit...hrrmm....

I don't necessarily think it should be legalized, but definitely de-criminalized. The growth and distribution would have to be highly regulated.... the last thing we need is corn/wheat/whatever farmers ditching their crops to grow weed.

Drunks scare me a hell of allot more than stoners.

It's the pot! Good to see you around, test.

I know what you mean. Drunks do it right out there in public. I once took my son on a deep sea fishing and barfing trip and we had a bad experience with two drunk guys who were endangering children on board and nearly wound up handcuffed by the ship's crew.

    Only if you're under it!!!

Kai, information is powerful. However, misinformation is overwhelming when wielded like an axe to fell any who stand in the way.

So it boils down to two types of people in my opinion. Those who's primary goal is to have an understanding of the truth, what is right, what is real and who choose to act according to that; and those who's primary goal is to have control and achieve their own success and are willing to do whatever it takes to other people to get what they want.

edit: shoot! I just realized there is a third group. Those who don't think for themselves. The sheep.

Overall, it was a good experience because thankfully noone got hurt. The passengers rallied together and were supportive of each other and the drunk guys made such asses of themselves it was great for young children to see what *not* to do when they grow up.
