  2. Awesome read sent. Ive heard a lot of stories about the Bug smashers getting mocked by the F/A-18 and the SR-71 shutting him up. Now I know who it was :)

  3. Great article... I love reading about the absolutely incredible engineering built into high-tech aircraft.

And that's a plane designed in the 1960s... amazing. Just imagine what we're capable of today.

I never was a big model maker, but I do have a Blackbird model still sitting in the closet at my dad's house.

Well the old horse I used to work in, the P3 Orion, was first built in the early 50s. Only now are they phasing out the aircraft. A very flexible aircraft, the P3 went from Anti-Submarine warfare to Anti-Surface/Drug interdiction/ECM-ESM in it's lifetime. It was one of the only nuclear capable aircraft in the Navy's arsenal for a time. It was modified to fire cruise missles during it's time as well.

It wasn't a pretty aircraft to look at. No sleek lines or sexy distinctiveness to it. It just did what it was supposed to do.

    A workhorse for sure :D

I remember flying them in the Janes Flight Simulator back in the day.

When I went to Huntsville a few years back, I was able to get up right next to an old, retired SR-71. The Aviation challenge had one down there, and they are really cool to look at. I remember the guy assigned to our group talking about how they once thought to put missiles on it. That didn't work so well as the missiles tended to lock onto the jet as it passed.

Yea that was one of the companies that EA chewed up and shat out.

  9. Anyone got Janes Fleet Command? I friggen LOVE that game. If you get a good mod for it it adds so much to it. So incredibly tactical.

I've got some unofficial stick time in one of the P-3's :) Was a flight from Detroit to Whidbey Island. Doing a TORPEX with some of the Seattle based P-3s.

  12. The best quote I've heard for a while... but is much better in context. "He told me to keep the pointy end forward."

Did anyone ever play Red Baron, Red Baron II or Aces of the Pacific? Those were some of the best pre-jet combat simulators that I ever flew.

I loved Aces of the Pacific. I was always a sucker for F4-U Corsair and still am, but that game was very unforgiving if you chose to fly that bird, especially trying to land it on a carrier! Which was true to it's real life brother.
