I got fired yesterday. I was the only web master in a company that does $12M+ a year on the web. About a week before the amount of traffic for the site sky rockets. Over half their income comes Nov-Dec and they "eliminated my position" just before it hits for real.

I can't wait for the first "how do we fix this?" call. It will be expensive. We had an outside group that we used for most of the programming, but they had no interest in running the site for us. Yeah, might have been a good idea to see if they were even interested in that first.

My severance package is... One and a half weeks. They want the passwords for it. I think I might let them stew a bit and see if they sweeten it.

So I come home in a foul mood. Best way to feel better will be for me to take a hammer ahold of a Super Mutant in Fallout 3. Take out some frustrations and irritations on something truly deserving.

    Red ring of death.

    Are you F-ING KIDDING ME?

    Luckily, it is under warranty.

(Heh, just got an email asking for a password)

What I need to find is someone with about $2-$5 million in sales a year that is thinking about going online. I would make them a God among men. Which reminds me, I need to go work my network some more. A friend is the artist for a company that does about $50 million a year and has no web presence.

Ouch, man, that sucks -- I hope you can find something. :(

Give them their passwords, but when they call you to fix something, you've just become an independent contractor, meaning you get to set the terms of the arrangement. Make sure you get what you're worth.

I'm sorry this happened to you. You deserve better. Off the record: (*#$&)(!@*(@$_()#($()#*($@&%_@)#%*#@_)*$_@#)($*$()*!!!!!!!!!!!

Like Simon says, be gracious. Politely give them their passwords and they will pay you for independent contract work. Something similar happened to my husband right after 9-11 when all the investors backed out on his company. I wanted to punish these people!!!omg, I was so mad. I wanted to hurt them, but fortunately my husband had his wits about him and remained very polite.

$150 per hour is what I convinced my husband to charge for contract work to do things only he knew how to do since he developed the product. I came up with that figure because $150 per hour per person is what IBM charged at that time when their people got called out to do consulting for similar projects. Market value. Guess what??? They paid it and they had to call him back several times.

After that he got a good job with great benefits and same salary and was able to use them as a reference -they raved about how professional and courteous he was.

Don't forget to throw in a few of these: "omg, you people were such a pain in my ass sometimes, but I really miss working with you. If this position opens up again, give me a call."

Boldly ask for what you need.

I need a hug, btw. /me huggles you!!!

That sucks man. You live in Kansas, right? I can e-mail my cousin who works for Sprint in Kansas City to see if he knows of a position for you. I'm not sure how long a drive it is or, perhaps, you can telecommute. My cousin works for their legal department in regards to their cell network, so I'm sure that he knows people inside their infrastructure who could use a man of your talents.

Sorry to hear that Tusk, AT&T just bought the company I work for so I'm not sure how long I will be employed either.

I think I have worked harder these last couple weeks than I did when I had a job.

I've been VERY gracious to those jokers. I actually told them I couldn't help them since it would screw up my unemployment.

I got my Xbox back today, it was fixed under warranty.

Thanks Sentrosi, I'm in Wichita and staying here.

So I had an interview with a legal firm. Basically what they want is someone that can maintain their web site, and do digital forensics. They subpoena a computer, my job would have been to pull all the data in the system out and turn it into a written report of what I found. Sounded painful. I told them they really needed someone from the banking or insurance industry.

Then I interviewed at a company that makes cellular and radio test equipment. Not testing phones, but testing cell towers, or radio stations or aircraft equipment. Sounds about 10X more interesting and the money is right. I go in for the second interview next week. A friend I have known since he was in college in 1984 has been with them for 20 years. Plus I actually build their very first web site back when I was a contractor.

If everything goes right, I will be back at work next week.

    Thanks for the support everyone!

Had second interview today with the radio test company. Went well. I hope to hear something Friday.

My boss first boss at the old company, the best boss I ever had and just a class act was supposedly fired today. I am waiting on confirmation. Damn sad. Pretty shocking.

To illustrate how bored I am right now... I have almost every single achievement for Fallout 3.

I just found out they started a criminal background check on me. Years of clean living may finally pay off.

Just found out that not only did they let my old boss go, a WONDERFUL woman and easily the greatest boss you could ever ask for.

They also let my copywriter go, who just started last spring.

And... The ONLY guy that can run the mainframe. Seriously. This is a system from 1985 and the only thing not running on it is payroll.

This guys job was to nurse this thing and coax it along. Everything from the credit cards being processed to the box label being printed.

OMFG you have got to be kidding me! They guy has been there for 10 years. 4 young kids, right before Christmas.

Wow... I think they did me a HUGE favor by eliminating my job.

You may be right about them doing you a favor by downsizing you early. Eliminating essential positions like that is not an action typically taken by a company that is planning to be around for long. :p

Wow that is nuts.... if you could, please keep the updates coming. I would love to know how their firing spree turns out for them when the stuff starts to break down.

OK update time and I think this thread can die.

Got the job with the Aeroflex. Webmaster, aeroflex.com. It is a little difficult to explain what they do. The most basic way to put it is that they make the equipment that tests, cell towers, phones, marine and aviation radios, military radios, radio stations etc. Goes a little further than that but I start to get confused.

So far I love it there. I am covered by ITAR due to some of our gear, which is a first for me. Weird working for a company that has different levels of access based on your nationality mainly. And rooms that are marked as only allowing access for government employees. Ever watch Big Bang Theory? Imagine a factory populated entirely by clones of the cast, except Penny.

My former company (Dean & DeLuca) lost about $2 million this holiday season compared to last. My job was to see the losses as they happened and figure out how to correct it. Yes, I am gloating. It sounds like the place is pretty much gutted.

I'm so glad you found something!

...and I don't know if I ever shared the story, but I was fired from my first job out of college. (I know you were laid off, and there is a huge difference, but wait for the similarity at the end) I worked as a medical sales rep for an imaging company. The more people I spoke to, the more I suffered with the burden of knowledge -that this company I worked for was breaking the law and doing things that hurt people.
The radiologist was reading films and tainting the results so she could be payed by people who had scans done under "LOP" (letter of protection from a lawyer meaning they had no money to pay for the scan, but *if* they won their court case they would use their winnings to pay their medical bills...see a conflict here?) and those who didn't really need surgery were having lots and lots of surgery ala insurance coverage because the radiologist made it appear to be necessary surgery, which makes money for the doctors so the crooked ones refer more patients. They were committing insurance fraud in several ways, that being one. The MRI and radiology equipment was not properly installed on location, because they wanted to cut some corners. The man who owned this facility, Dr. Randy Gillum, also owned a hospital in south dallas that was non profit so they got a tax break from the government in exchange for taking care of indigent patients, but they didn't take care of indigent patients. They released these non-payers AMA-against medical advice if they didn't fork over the dough.

I have this stupid thing called a conscience so when I know things aren't right, I can't just keep my mouth shut and rake in the bucks. I'm not the kind to secretly spy and report info to trap someone. I'm a straightforward idiot who goes right up to the people breaking the law and naively asks them up front to please change and when millions of dollars are at stake, or even when there's not much money, but it's just a stupid friggen game (tribalwar) that won't really go anywhere but it's a matter of comparing penis sizes...sorry, I've gone off on a tangent...

    back to the med fraud...

I was fired because I raised concerns and I was pretty humiliated. I did receive compensation because there was no valid reason for firing me, but still I was wounded. My father in law one day asked me about it and he said his protege had been working for the hospital owned by Dr. Gillum and because he discovered countless incidents of fraud, when he brought it to their attention...he was fired as well.

ok, here's the connection: Dr. Randy Gillum and his hospital and Pioneer Imaging were taken down!!! -by the district attorney in Dallas a few months after I was fired. Vindication.

Sweet, sweet, sweet vindication. Although it didn't pay the bills...but I can still taste the sweetness.
