Nice to see that crafting also shouldn't be as marginalized in SWtOR as it seems to be in WoW..

I can't see how they could make crafting like that unless they made it so people could create literally their *OWN* items from scratch.

The issue here is that in games like this people will grind grind grind to the top level and there's no way for someone to be "renowned" for their crafting because ultimately everyone ends up with the same stuff. Again, the only possible way I could see that solved is that someone is able to make CUSTOM items from scratch that are totally unique.

I doubt we will ever see that, it creates far to much imbalance.

A sad example of that is WoW and how there are a limited number of people with the resources to make some of the highest end gear in the game. Some of it now is equal to or better a lot of what drops in everything but the highest level raids.
A lot of engineer schematics that others could use were not widely available either, due to cost and resources required. The problem with WoW is it's all about grinding as you said.

EVE is a better example. My character to this day still has blueprints for materials and ships/equipment found and invented that he still can't use because none of my characters at all have the required non-combat skills to make. That and you have to have a veritable vault of specific materials to make it.
Is it impossible to do? No. It will however take a tonne of focus on a part of the game that makes what you do very niche. So forget about combat ships and flying around if you're skilling up for invention and manufacturing. Hence why many people have multiple accounts.

Last alliance I was in is still going strong, and was at 2200 people, and there were all kinds of things they couldn't produce and had to buy off the market for ridiculous prices, or figure something out with an older more established alliance. Out of 2200 people you can't find one who can make certain items? When you fully understand how complex the market/crafting system is in EVE, it makes perfect sense. You end up being the one who can consistently make those T2 rigs or T3 modules, you're "the" person to come to, and on the market you can set your own prices.

You don't need to make up items to make crafting valuable. The more indepth you make it, as well as the random nature of getting schematics/blueprints; I can completely see how they'd be able to have characters being one of few who can make more and more rare items. Especially if they have to steer their character development in that direction. All they have to do is make the crafting experience a) valuable and b) random/indepth enough and yes, you will find guilds that don't necessarily have someone who can make everything at their fingertips.

Not everything has to be an oversimplified WoW experience.

I honestly don't see this being as deep of a game as EVE. EVE has it's own uniqueness I highly doubt this game will touch on. WOW Crafting is pretty much as basic as it gets  Whereas EVE is pretty much as complex as it gets. Hopefully they can indeed forge out some kind of middle ground.

If they can pull it off that would be sweet :D But if they manage to make this game in any way unique other than wow in space they will have a money maker.

From what I've read and seen about this game though it just seems like it will be more of the same, with a few extra paths to get there :(

This is totally true - but with the money wow makes everyone wants to duplicate it. Here's to hoping that Bioware isn't thinking the same way and is going for something innovative.

I think that's what they're probably aiming for Hamma, something in between.. EVE market/crafting is a bit ridiculous and impossible to get really into if you aren't already a deeply established player. WoW is so simple it's almost stupid; the complexity coming from raiding rarity of recipes/ingredients, and a broken auction house.

Make the craftables useful and not instantly obsolete by drops from dungeons/missions.
Make it involved enough that it can't just be done with a couple ingredients and a 14 second click of the mouse move.

I think then they'll have a system that comes close to what they're talking about and will be a nice departure from WoW..

I like that you don't have to physically go around farming for ingredients or recipes as well. Options to keep you playing not gathering. :p

    Indeed!

I am curious how that works though - sometimes you had to farm alot of stuff to make things and level. I wonder if players can gather as well if needed?

Also - they better make sure there is enough content to keep players busy if they aren't going to be gathering materials in their downtime.

Players can gather, but essentially you seem to be able to offload the "grind" of farming onto your companions, which is excellent. I think if you want to actually gather tons of materials though you will have to resort to farming, but for those of us who want to play the game, and not some gathering simulator, it's a nice step forward..

It'd be nice to see a game with some of the EVE balance that either some of the best or at least most common items in the game are crafted.

I've begun to say that if you want a crafting sim, go play Farmville. It's free and it's all over the damn place. Hell, my uncle keeps asking me to send him nails for his next barn. Been thinking of sending him a box in the mail.

 Yea what an evil game.

I really love crafting in MMO's its one of my favorite parts. It shouldn't be a grind or a chore though it should be fun.

Creating something unique is always what motivated me. In LoTRO you could make a unique item given certain conditions and a chance, and then you could name it. That was cool.

A bit more on crafting.. I like how he says near the end, that even if you don't like crafting per se', you can still skill your crew up with missions and abilities for say, finding loot, or influence..
