Thoughts on Upgrading

Been thinking (and tweeting) some thoughts going through my head in regards to where I want to put most of my energies into this game. I'm thinking that I really want to explore the cosmos and find those jump points and hidden systems. Go out and explore the universe. But right now I don't have the ships for that sort of commitment.

Currently I only have the M50 Racer ($90) and the Hornet Tracker ($140). My tracker has LTI on it.

Looking around at the site I could get the Freelancer DUR variant ($125) or I could get the Constellation Taurus and upgrade as needed to get it as a dedicated explorer. The Aquila is selling for $275 right now versus the Taurus at $150. So there's a bit of a price difference between the Taurus and the Aquila.

Thinking if I melt my M50 ($90 credit) and apply it to the Taurus I could get a nice multi-crew ship and upgrade it in game as needed to get it to the Aquila. Or would I be better off melting everything to get the Aquila?

  2. Wait for the Carrack to go on sale?

  3. I wouldn't melt the m50.

I'm literally laughing my ass off right now. Being a huge fan of Top Gear, I was waiting for their version of "The Stig" to show up.

    I guess that'll be me.

You said, we were going to scout too. If your not into racing melt the M50 or it will just set there. The way I see it, we are going to see a lot of combat and escorts. I don't think there will be a lot of racing once the full game is released. The modules are fine to use right now. Once the full game comes out they will be a ghost town. Why play a module with limited territory when one can fly in a universe.

I get the feeling Hornet trackers (or something built up in a similar fashion) will likely be infinitely useful in both combat fleets and exploration as scouts/explorers. The M50 I imagine you'll likely be able to pick up pretty easily in the game anyway. That said, when you first log into the game and think about the things you want to be doing (or will be doing), is it exploration? combat? or racing? Two of those we'll likely be doing from day one, the other is a pretty solo endeavour and not something you're likely to do right off the bat. The ships you "buy" are what you'll have at the beginning of the game, not the only ships for the entirety of the game; so when you think ship pledges, think ships you want in your hangar for when you start playing, because you know what you want to do.

  7. if you want explorer, you got tarus, freelancer, or the carrick....melt the m50 if you think you will not be doing a ton of racing....you could also help the initial cost of something i the 200 range if you pick up cheap assed auroras from time to time......after say about 4 of those with the m50, you are at or over 200.........call it investment banking if you will

  8. This is exactly what I do. Buy Auroras every so often and melt them.

I am going to open up a bar "Hack's Hangover Fest". Can't wait to get that outlawed booze from the restricted zone!!

  10. Also of note, the M50 and 350R are now permanent additions to the store, so you could buy another one at any time before launch, if you felt so inclined.

Agreed. I'm not going to melt my M50 or my Tracker anytime soon.
The Carrack, I think, is going to be my target ship going forward.

I am thinking about ditching my racers, I really don't see myself racing at all.

  13. I can't believe the prices on these ships. Is this game going to truly be pay to win?

It's not pay to win Frothy. You can't think of it in those terms. It's more "pay how you want to play" than anything else.

This game is reaching almost every kind of gamer. If all you want to do is PVP, there's a few ships for that. Want to be a tactician rather than a fighter jock? No need to but a ship for that. Just be part of a CnC crew. Would you rather explore the 'verse? There's a ship for that.

And again, I want to reiterate this, whatever you want to do. Tailor your purchases to suit your needs.

Per your statement "Pay2win". When AC first launched multiplayer, there was a pilot who waxed all the competition with a basic Aurora along with a few purchased guns. He probably invested $80 into a ship while others had in rated well into $200 to gun him down.

I really detest the term pay2win. It's almost like the old school "Laaaaaaaaag". You got beat. Dust yourself off and figure out how to beat them. In this game you can.

  15. The ships are only being offered during the crowd funding campaign. Ship sales will stop once the persistent universe goes live.

  16. I guess it's hard for me to put it in the same terms you guys have applied here. I see what you're trying to say, but I know that when the game launches, it will be nearly impossible to put everything into a zero-sum system where everyone is on a level playing field. Those who have invested hundreds of dollars will complain that their support is not being rewarded with an advantage over the people who invested next to nothing.

I'm trying real hard not to sound skeptical, but it's just difficult for me to accept. As I've said before about a few issues with this game, "I hope I'm wrong and it turns out to be the most amazing space combat sim to ever be made." I'm not a Wing Commander fan, but I am eagerly awaiting any new official installment in the Freespace series. FS2 was the best space combat sim I've ever played and I would love to get a similar, if not better, experience from SC.

Dude people are already whining that they don't get enough of an advantage for having paid money, we just have to trust that the "people" read as dumb fuck internet people, are not listened too.

With out being too confrontational and thinking about an hour long conversation we had on the same topic today, please name a game coming out that is not chock full of cash shops and pre-order alpha/beta garbage. I couldn't but ricoxg and a couple others named a few but this is the new gaming industry.

I look at it this way.
If the game even delivers half of what it promises, it will be an excellent game.
Space Exploration - "Second star to the right, straight on til morning."
Space Combat - I can't wait to hear "BATTLE STATIONS! BATTLE STATIONS! ALL HANDS THIS IS THE CAPTAIN! MAN THE SHIP BATTERIES! PREPARE PORTSIDE CANNONS!" or "I got a bogey on my six! Lunar! Get him off me!" or even "They've cut the artificial gravity. Switch to your magboots and advance to the bridge!" all in the same night.
Economy of a scale that's only been attempted with Eve.
Racing - "Son, that's not banging. That's rubbin'. And rubbin's racin'."
And almost anything else you could dream of. Except the Death Star. I won't be flying a Death Star in this game. A minor setback to be sure.

No game is perfect. And no game is going to deliver everything it promises. And there will be naysayers and negative nannies who believe something like this can't be done. But I believe. I believe because, when you look a man in his eye and shake his hand and tell him what a great honor it is to shake his hand, and the man becomes as humble as Jiminy Cricket, you know you've put your faith in the right person and the right company.

Yes, I've shook Chris Roberts hand. Yes, I had that conversation with him back in April. We talked for 15 minutes while a line formed behind me of others like myself. Believe what you want. Hope what you want. I'm not here to convince you Star Citizen is going to be the best game ever. I'm here because I want to play Star Citizen with the other DragonWolves who believe.

  19. There are a few of us here who already have the Constellation; whilst I'm not against you spending more money, do you really have to be the captain of such a ship to appreciate the experience? That, and you may want those other ships you have in the future for some gaming when the rest of us aren't online.

Frothy, you don't need a bunch of ships for this. Buy one, then do the rest with in game money. Sent made me buy more because he keeps changing his mind on what the hell we are going to do in the game. He discovered he is a complicated person, so now we all have to be.
