IT Training

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by FaithStrike, 4 Aug 2005.

  1. Where online is the best place to go to get some training in the IT field? I would like to get some more formal training but I really do not want to have to deal with core classes and what not. (e.g. english, math, etc.)

And also what is your opinion as to whether or not I should go for an Associates or a Bachelors degree?

    Thanks,
    Faithstrike

I attended ITT Technical Institute and graduated with an Associates in Computer Networking. I currently work for New York State as a Computer Operator. It does not use my degree one bit, except to get people up and running on the Exchange server. I've been working there for three years and just now am on the verge of getting a promotion, but that is mostly due to the hiring freeze the Govenor put on all NYS departments about 2 years ago.

For what you're looking for, I'd go check out your local ITT Technical Institute. Go on a tour. Talk to some people outside that have graduated from that school. See where they are now. Ask them if they offer any A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA, or MCSE prep courses. My school offered the A+ prep for free. I attended but I have yet to go take my test for it. If you graduate and have a couple of certifications under your belt, you'll be better off than just the degree.

Coursework wasn't that hard. You will have to take core classes like Math and English, but they were rather easy to me. I graduated with honors, so it can't be that hard! If you want some more questions asked, let me know.

You might also want to check out Devry. You can earn your (accredited) bachelor's degree in 3 years. There are still a few "fluff" classes, but those are minimal and I assume required for any accredited degree. They also supposedly have a fairly good job placement office.

I'm going to DeVry right now in the CET program, the core classes are there to make sure you don't walk out the door looking like a retard writing reports, speaking, etc. and lowering the value of the degree for others.

  5. Do you live in Macon, Ga? If so, you might look at some different computer learning centers like New Horizons around the Atlanta area. Travel would be an inconvenience but you can find some week long courses that won't make it so bad.

  6. I was kinda looking for something online if I could get it. I know the Core classes are to make you a well rounded individual and all, but I am just looking to increase my skills in computers not to become some head honcho or something. I kinda like being a grunt, just want to be a grunt making more money.

That's what I'm doing right now FaithStrike. I have virtually no responsibilities down in the Print room right now, but I've been to a couple of meetings involving a new scheduler that the department I'm working for is implementing. And I'm earning far more money working for the State than I could working out in the private sector. Also, I've got almost complete job security, as there has not been a state wide layoff in NYS for about 20 years. I count myself lucky that I have a job. Most of the people I graduated with still have the same jobs they had when they got out, slinging burgers or *gasp* working for Radio Shack.

  10. I am fortunate as well to have a job. I just want to make myself more valuable to the company so that I may do more for it than I do now. Not in the way of responsibilities but in the way of less outsourcing. I hate being dependant on someone else to come in and fix a problem when if I would just got to school that wouldn't happen but in rare situations.

Depending on the company, perhaps you can negotiate some certification courses. I'm not familiar with your company (or you for that matter) but look into taking some core courses like A+, Network +, Security + or even branch out to look at the Cisco certifications.

  12. I thought about that and my supervisor told me they would reimburse me for classes that partained to my job, but they would not help me get certs. I took that as meaning that they wouldn't pay for tests.

  13. Want to make the money?

You need to get into Program Management. However, you first must manage a couple projects to show that you can deliver on time, within budget and that whatever the system is actually works at the end.

There are classes for this also. Take some.

In this capacity, you do not do the grunt work, but having that experience helps quite a bit so that you do not become a PM that does not actually know anything. ;)

Any time you are in on the deployment of a new system, be sure to put that in your resume. Hiring managers like to see accomplishments that you can point out.

In the end, it's results that count. There are LOTS of people with all kinds of acronyms after their name that don't know a GHz from a GByte.

  14. Or you can be a complete moron and join the Army and become a 25B (Information systems operator/maintainer and networker) like me. Get paid dirt, roll in mud. Jump out of blackhawks and jump into dark holes in the ground hopeing there is earth beneath your feet, eating the nastiest of meat loafs and work 14 hour days. Doesn't sound like your normal everyday network admin... but all in all the training is mighty fine. All of the people i have met leaving the army from my MOS or job generally get starting positions anywhere from 65-120 a year. its a large range but damn even the bottom of the barrel there looks kind of nice being that i make maybe one third of it now.

Only if bush could stay in office another 40 years, i would be rich. Every 30 days im getting a raise.
