Tech Opinions

  1. Ok, so I'm looking for a new monitor since my 21" Viewsonic G810 CRT died.

I'm thinking I'll go with an LCD because I'm heading off to college soon, and the more space, the merrier.

I know that the lesser the response time, the better (like 12ms > 16ms.) I'm just worried about things like 'ghosting' and 'dead pixels.'

I've done a small amount of research, but I've waited too late to learn it all, so I come to you tech geniuses.

I'm eyeing two right now, because they're 19" (pretty big), they're low in response time, and they both have great sets of rebates that lower the price incredibly.

    So, here we go.

    This:

Obviously, I lean towards the second because it's a Sony brand name, and I've never heard of X2Gen. X2Gen is cheaper though, and supposedly has a faster response time.

So.. what do you guys think. Good/bad/ugly? Good for gaming? Neither?

Let me hear it. (Quickly, if possible!) :)

  2. While the size saving is nice and all, tigerdirect offers refurbished Dell/Sony Trinitron 19" CRT monitors that support up to 1600X1200 Resolution.

I use one whenever I can, since my parents have one on each of their computers, and it displays every pixel beautifully, sharply, and brightly. I absolutly love the way the monitor looks.

The downside: It's huge, and weighs about 60 pounds.

For LCDs that X2Gen seems to be pretty good. I can't speak from experience, since I've never owned an LCD monitor myself, but tigerdirect has never steered me wrong.

  3. I say pick your price range, then do research on anything available within, if you're planning on just playing games, then response time is probably the key, if you're planning on watching movies on it as well, make sure it's got accurate colors, and good brightness.

I got a Samsung 172x a year or so back when I wanted an LCD - its a 17" but the response times seem fine. I've never really seen any ghosting at all - I think as time goes on the LCD's are getting far better.

  5. I have both a samsung and a mag innovision both are 19". I play all games fine, no ghosting at all....and nothing in need for speed or bf2......

I too have a 19" LCD... BenQ FP937S. It's served me well so far with absolutely no issues so far. I think I've had this for roughly a year now.

If you can avoid Sony, I'd say do so, if only for the price difference.. Nothing wrong with a Sony monitor, just they're overpriced for what they are.

Not to mention, Samsung make sony's LCD panels anyway, so why pay extra for the name alone?

I've got a Samsung with 22ms delay, and I've never seen any ghosting or related artifacts. I've also got a BenQ, and its been great as well, not to mention decently priced.

Samsung is probably far and ahead the leader in the LCD industry. Other companies farm out their actual panel tech from them when they make their TVs and monitors, so you really can't go wrong if you can find a decently priced one.

Response time is important for games, but pretty much most of the LCD's you find out there now have a decent enough delay that you'd never have a problem with gaming.

Dead pixels, is something you'll have to consider as well. Check what each manufacturer's policy is on dead pixels before you buy it, and potentially go with the best price, and best return policy.

When I bought my first LCD, Samsung would take it back if it had 3 dead pixels, while everyone else wanted 7 or more. I'm not sure what the policies are like now (that was 4 years ago for my Samsung), but I'd imagine they're becoming quite standard.

Try to stay away from the brands you've never heard of, keep your price within what you can afford, and try and find the best dead pixel return policy in that range..

  8. I have 2 samungs a 17 and 19, and one hitachi 19 all run great but i like the samsungs because the blacks seem sharper. No ghosting and great gameplay.

  9. I like my CRT, it gives my skin that nice pasty look. ;)

Both are good. I like the Sony myself but if price is the factor do what Dyganth suggested.

  10. how much are you looking to spend? If you can afford $500 then I'd take a look at the Dell 20.1in wide screen LCD. Siberian and Wolf both have one and they are really nice.

  11. I can't hit $500 for sure. I'd like to not break $220 if possible (which is going to be tough considering the two I'm looking at are that cheap only because of some sweet rebates.)

Still havn't really heard a definitive from anyone. If presented with these two choices (or something very similar for the same price range), which would you choose?
