  1. Hey all.

Well, I've been gone for the last week and a half or so but not without good reason. I got the new graphics card in my comp and the power supply. Worked fantastic for the next week then it just stopped. I doubt its the card's fault or the supply's.

Every time I hit my power button, it just runs, and runs, and runs. The screen doesn't come up, nothing happens just the loud hum of the constant startup. As if stuck in an endless loop. The comp is 3 years old, been under HEAVY usage, from early PS days to not-so-distant WoW nights/days/weeks.

Why this happened I do not know. Rebuilding one would be a couple weeks/monthes off because I'm broke, and the 'rents would be far past apprehensive towards the thought of it (grades :( ).

Before I go and get my dad and all his diabolical schemes that usually include his friends that are only 50% correct when it comes to computers together, I was wondering what you all thought.

    Peace.

    [EDIT] PSP postage ftw.

  2. Make sure the card is in the slot correctly. If it is can you put the old card back in and see if it runs?

Is the mother board beeping at all?

  3. Problems like this are part of the joys of computing.

I usually start by disconnecting everything and starting at the begining.

Unplug all cables. Switch to 1 stick of ram. Pull out all PCI cards.

I take it your not getting any video. No beeps and it doesn't actually load into windows?

Hard to tell, if card just wasn't seated right you'd get a beep. If the card was dead I think it would still boot into windows. But defintely try using the old card also.

  4. Now it turned on. If I were to turn it off I bet it wouldn't turn on again, I'm so confused :-(

I will do as daleon suggested, see how it goes.

    Thanks
    Peace.

  5. No RAM and you hear beeps? Motherboard is ok.

No RAM and no beeps? Mobo is toast.

The abnormally loud "grinding" noise when firing up could also be one of the 2 primary fans - the PSU's fan or the CPU's coolling fan. If they're ball bearing based and you hear grinding it's likely the bearing has gone sour and is having problems rotating. I had a PSU go out on me and a similar sound was heard.

  6. No beeping.

After extensive work with it, its the hardrive. I will replace it soon enough, should be back up in around a week.
