Quad-core offers no significant boost to gaming. Not until programmers write code to take advantage of the three other cores.

But if you're into video editing/encoding/etc then I'd recommend quad-core processing.

  3. :jawdrop: heck i dont think they have mastered dual core for gaming yet, atleast not on a large scale. However it still is something to drool over.

Some games can take advantage of multiple processors/cores. Anything based on id or Epic's 3D engines, for example, can be configured to use multiple processors.

Even games that don't use SMP themselves can still see some benefit. For example, the drivers for (S)ATA disk controllers found in most desktop systems utilize the CPU to perform most of their operations. When you have an extra CPU that's not being used to play your game, you're less likely to see framerates drop when the game loads new data, as the disk controller's driver will just use the idle CPU.

Quad-core is currently overkill for pretty much any desktop application, unless you multitask heavily. Go down to dual-core, and spend the extra money on RAM. If there's anything you can't have too much of, it's RAM. :D
