iTunes

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Strygun, 15 Dec 2006.

  1. Hey folks,

What are you guys' opinions on the iTunes program? Do you use it? Do you not? Why? Do you have any beef with it?

I'm thinking of switching over to iTunes (mainly for it's famed superb quality of handling music libraries), but also for the music downloading capability.

    Speak!

Update #1: It should be noted that I do not currently have an iPod.

  2. I use it for nothing more than to update my ipod, which is changing soon when I make my purchase of a Zune. I switched from Winamp to Windows Media Player 11 several monthes ago. My main beef with Itunes is its lack of ability to be customized, skins, interface, library searching, etc. WMP11 is flat out beautiful, G-Force (demo is free, I got the plat version from a bud) is really sweet if you like visualizations, its synced with my 360 allowing for streaming music, videos, and pictures. I am all about WMP11. Then again I've kinda gone the route of the avid microsoft fan :) .

I love iTunes. The ability to make "smart playlists" is really nice. The feature allows you to create playlists based off of album names, artists, beats per minute, bit rate, category, comment, genre, and a lot more. Also, when searching for a song, album, or artist, you simply start typing the name into the top right corner and the results instantly appear on the screen.

If you have some songs that you often like to play louder or quieter than it is played normally, you can select those songs and set the volume iTunes will play those songs. For songs that have beginnings or endings you would rather skip through, you can set at what time you want the player to start and stop playing a song.

The store is nice, they have a huge library and a lot of obscure artists. Purchasing from the store is insanely easy to do, simply type in your password and it will begin the download. Download speeds are quite good, and if for some reason your computer crashes during the download (which has happened to me before), you can call up Apple and they will quickly reactivate the downloads for you.

Subscribing to podcasts or TV shows is simple, the program automatically checks for updates every time it is launched.

    I have spoken!

I've never been one to use such things, as I will just play a cd or for work I just copy the cd to the hd and then let WMP play on shuffle under All Music.

What I am curious about, though, is the music you can download. Those that have this service, if you would, just for my curiosity, see if there are some of these bands, and if they are listed, what albums can be downloaded.

Or is it just song based by band?

    Here are some bands...

    Bathory
    Mercyful Fate
    Venom
    Celtic Frost
    Heavy Load
    Possessed

Just a small list, but I'm guessing most won't be there. But I don't know.

This is just for curiosities' sake.

    Thanks!

  6. we use rhapsody, where we pay a monthly service fee, i think its 15$ and have access to TONS of music, that we we download into our mp3 players. one fee takes care of i believe, its up to 3 per account (players that is) or something. Anyways, you have to constantly update your subscription on your mp3 player, but unlike itunes, you can download as many songs as your player can hold, only catch, if you want to burn them or save them you have to pay, but if your just looking to listen to a bazillion different albums all the time it works wonders :) they have a pretty extensive library. I have just fallen in love with the service because i can pick whatever i feel like listening to and go :) there is another service out there similar to rhapsody, but i dont remember who it is.

another thing is that certian artists have contracts with one company or not the other, so its good to know if they are with the service you use :) but its another option out there. :)

iTunes has Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost.

The other service similar to rhapsody is Napster. The problem with those services is that the songs are in wmp format, so they will not work with some mp3 players (iPods being one of them).

I use rhapsody in free mode, output the audio to a recording app then create MP3's for burning on CD's. Forget that monthtly fee crap! :D

  10. /cough, newsgroups ftw!

I started using Itunes a while back when I got the 60g'er video. It does a great job of organizing your music library. Work that would have taken years turns into only weeks heh. If you have a large MP3 collection you still have alot of work to get it all organized and catgorized. I wish there was a little more automation you could do by selecting multiple songs at a time and making changes, etc.

You can select multiple songs at a time and change their category and what not.

  12. What about like artist name, album, etc.

    Yep!

All you have to do is select those songs (by control + left click and or shift + left click) then right click and select "Get Info" and a little popup will say "Are you sure you want to edit information for multiple items?" Click "Ok" and what you type in the fields will be applied to all of the selected songs.

  14. Cool, I thought I had tried that before. Need to make about a million updates still.
