Darkfall

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Heavygain, 15 Dec 2006.

  1. I came across this MMO in the making called Darkfall. Now, I was told that CDL is aiming to move away from the whole MMORPG thing for awhile, but this is a whole new level. The game is the most opened ended game that I can think of to date. Imagine a world in which your clan builds an empire, your clan is responsible for setting up the economy, the defenses, the structures, everything down to the rights of the citizens in it. You tell your gaurds who to kill (members of opposing clans, players, creatures, whatever) and you tell them who to allow.
On a smaller scale, the game combines skill based leveling (you level skills rather than your character) with and FPS like game. The best example I can think of is Oblivion/Morrowind, mixed with a touch of Eve, and just a dab of Planetside. Basically an MMORPGFPS. If you kill someone, they are fully lootable, if they kill you, you are fully lootable. Now not to say items aren't valuable and such because of that, its fair game. For instance, say you are entering some woods, and as you pass a bush an evil alligned Dwarf leaps out from within it, getting the better of you and (literally) decapitating you. Just before your head severs and you spawn at the graveyard naked, you catch his name "Doubt". So you send out a guild message saying "Hey, has anyone seen a Dwarf named "Doubt"? He killed me and took my stuff" then sure enough, a guildie lets you know he just saw him in Dortevil. So you gather up several of your buddies and make your way their, you catch him opening his house door so you jump him, kill him, take your stuff, his stuff, and rob his house blind.

The game is so open ended you could literally play as nothing but a crafter and never run out of buisness or something to do, you could play a merchant, buying and selling wares, you could play a mercenary, selling yourself out to clans who are at war with another clan and are losing ground.

The game is made for PvP, not PvE. The game is incredibly vast, you could literally wander off for no reason other than to explore a coastline and along the way you would find a dungeon filled with ancient artifacts gaurded by skeletal gaurdians (This is the Morrowind touch, as well as the sword-fps mixture) these artifacts could be worth an incredible ammount to the right merchant or the right clan, or even to yourself (ancient weapon perhaps?).

Clan wars, this might appeal to you guys more than anyone else I know. Besides the good v bad war (orc/mahirim versus human/dwarf/mirdain, then alfar who hate everyone) there are clan wars, (you can make a clan with all of the races, but you won't be able to find any citizens or guards that won't be player, basically you would make a building and just use it as a PK house). You can have good v good clan wars where you battle over your politics, your land, and the resources (forests, mines, etc. You need to gather resources to continue to expand your resources, or you can hire npc laborers that make the journey on their own). In these clan wars its all about these resources. Say you are in the said war, you gather 15 of your guild mates, and stealthily make your way to one of the enemy resource points, you then begin to sabotage their gatherings by slaughtering their laborers, setting ablaze areas of the forest, etc, anything that you can think of you can do.

These clan wars may not have the 10,000 strong armies that the Good vs. Bad battles have, but they still have very large scale clashes. You could form alliances with other guilds to overpower an overconfident, powerhouse guild that has been crossing lines over resources or territories. There is collision detection, basically making mid-evil battle tactics come into play, formations are key, making a stand at at city gate against hordes under a necromancer clan's zombies is key. Rushing at an enemy force in a massive blob where you will probably end up slashing a teammate several times before you get to the enemy is very innefficient. There is friendly fire, you aim your spells, you aim your swords, you aim your blocks, and your AOE will kill friend and foe alike, as well as damaging the area itself.

I would love to fight along side you guys in this game, I haven't been this excited about a game since Planetside, which lead to me finding CDL, PSU, and most of the people I play with today :) .

  2. It reminds me alot of what SB was, and if you were around for its launch you know how that went.

  3. I have faith that it will replace UO as the most open ended MMO to date, and it won't bomb like SB's release :)

  4. Darkfall is vapor

  5. Oh man...... i'm getting this.........

  6. We will see, they just released more screenies, I've seen 2 gameplay videos, I don't believe its vapor.

  7. Been following this game off and on for the better part of 2 years now. Been accepted into the "beta" for about 10 months now, give or take. Honestly, I wish this game would happen as I was very much looking forward to it. But its underfunded and poorly managed and I have pretty much given up on it. It may well happen, but I wouldnt pin my hopes on it.
