My red poodle, Gryphon when he was a puppy:
    (Thanks The_Ham for hosting. :) )

He's the sweetest dog. If I give him a treat before I leave teh house he won't touch it until I get home.

I altered a jacket my son outgrew to fit Gryphon. He loves to wear it. If he finds it in the house he brings it to me and wants me to put it on.

He is so great with the kids. He lets them tug on his ears and pet him way too hard without complaint. Even obeys the kids commands.

I'm not much for dogs but any dog that waits for you to come home to eat its treat must really like you. You must be a good master. :)

My Dad had a lab. It was a great dog. Not very brite (very smart at learning tricks, but had no doggy common sence). It lived to be 16 years old :)

My dad has 11 dogs. Yes, 11. Well, actually 9, the two stupid Daschunds really don't count. they're really more large rat than dog. the others are 3 German Shepherds, 2 collie mixes, 2 golden retrievers, a rottweiler, and a pit bull mix.

    I only have 3 myself. :D

I had a Shetland Sheepdog, or also known as a Sheltie, until this past April. Her name was Brandy and she was the best dog ever. We got her when she was a puppy while I was stationed in Germany. She was actually born in the Netherlands. We had the Dutch papers on her, but the AKC peeps here in the States wanted an outrageous amount to transfer them, so we didn't. But, anyway, she contracted or got an infection in her upper jaw somehow. We didn't catch it until it was too late and it had begun to affect her brain. She had a slight stroke and then began to go blind so we made the toughest decision we have ever made. We put her to sleep. OMG, that was a horrible day. She was almost 12 years old when she died. I swear she was the perfect dog. She never jumped up on people. She was a not a licking dog, unless she REALLY liked and trusted you; and then it was only a little "slurp". :p She would come over to me when she was feeling lonely and sit on my foot or lap depending on where I was sitting. Just plop her butt right down on me. :D

We could tell her to go to the basement if she ever was acting bad, which was rare, and she would go immediately. She would wait about 15 minutes usually and then come back up.

At night she would go from room to room checking on the girls, stopping at each room and sleeping for a few minutes with each one. I am sure she checked on me and Angela when we were asleep too!

She met me everyday at the door, always ready to get a belly scratchin' and to make sure I was safe. Man, I miss that dog something fierce...

I will get a pic and post it here for you all....

  17. ...

I know what you mean about missing your dog.
WARNING, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY LONG POST, WHICH IS DONE AS MUCH TO REMEMBER MY PETS FOR MYSELF AS ANYTHING ELSE. IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN A LONG DISCUSSION ON MY PETS (PAST AND PRESENT) YOU NEED NOT READ.
I have had a good number of animals put to sleep in my relatively short life, and one ran away on me (or rather my mother). When I was very young, my father kept a cat whose name was I think Sasha, a sweet little thing, and two dogs named lucky and Sam. I only remember them a little, but from what I remember, they were as good or better than Manitou's. Both were as tolerant as could be, they let me play all over them when I was younger and they were great watchdogs. Sam (a black lab) had to be put to sleep because one night he was standing there looking at us when suddenly he just... collapsed. He let out a little yelp and we decided to take him to the vet and put him to sleep. I still remember that vividly, he was even getting happy when we went to the vet. Sam had to be put to sleep when he started (if I remember correctly, I may have the precise condition wrong, I was still rather young when these dogs were around) hemorrhaging in his sinuses, and basically having a massive nosebleed all over the place. We had to keep him in the kitchen until my stepmother finally took him to the vet one day and put him to sleep (I was upset that they didn't at least wait so I could be there for a long time). At this time, my mom had a couple of rabbits (I don't remember them much, except that they were good as rabbits go, and that they seemed pretty big to me at the time :)) two cats, and a dog. The cats were a couple of brothers who came from one of my uncles' cat's litters (some of my uncles cats are as old or older than I am, he was up to something like 14 at one point, they are down to like 7 or 8 from attrition at this point). They were smart buggers, extremely wary, but smart. The dog was named Sable (before the wrestler, so don't even go there). That is one of the smartest dogs I have ever seen. She could open the refrigerator (and did on a regular basis, we ended up bungeeing the door, and even then she would occasionally get in). She operated the stove at least once, and she could actually open some house doors. One of my cats could actually do the door trick too. She was an amazingly gentle dog; she would eat out of your hand without a problem, and could in fact eat corn on the cob, just like a human (right off the cob, around the outside). The dog that ran away on my mother and I was actually MY dog, I raised him and he was purchased as my playmate. His name was same, but I forget his breed, he was a lovable little black dog with white patches. I would wrestle with that dog all the time, unfortunately, I traveled between my dads and my moms, and the dog had a hard time when I was not there to play with it. One day when my mom was walking him and sable, he ran away, and my mom decided not to chase after him. I made my mom search for him for weeks, but we never found a trace of him. After he ran away (and my mom and I moved again) I got a guinea pig, whom I also named sam. An adorable little creature, I had lots of fun with him, I still have a scar on my finger where he bit me when I did something to him (twisted his leg while I was carrying him into the living room we thought, I can still remember the sound of the crunch as he bit me). He was a lucky little devil, unlike most people I know, I did not get angry with him, and I just set him down on the couch and got my mom. Unfortunately, I stopped paying attention to him much in his later years; I was young and still had not really matured enough for something like that to keep my attention for its full life span. He died while I wasn't home; my mom spent the last hour or so of his life petting him. I really miss those animals, it was actually a little bit difficult writing about a couple of those. More recently, we had a cat at my dads (my dad and I would have loved another dog, but my step-mother, her parents, and her children aren't exactly animal people (except for her father, he was a farmer)). We had to put the cat to sleep just this winter; it was getting to be nearly as old as I am. He was always a crotchety cat, he was big in his younger days but he had wasted away to almost nothing in his later years. He was an amazingly communicative cat, drove my step-family nuts, but my dad and I usually put up with it since we could understand basically what he was asking for (he had a lot of variation in his pitch, giving him a fairly large "vocabulary") and he could understand a fair number of English words. My mom and I had a kitten at one point, who would have become a cat except that when she was still with her littermates, she managed to pull an ironing board down on herself (she belonged to our downstairs neighbor). It was sad, because she was my favorite of the litter, but we ended up keeping her. A brain damaged-growth retarded cat is a very interesting pet. She could get up on things by sheer muscular force and claws (which includes people, and people sitting in chairs, extremely painful), but had to have medication (I know how to pronounce it, but not spell it, it is a common seizure medication) to control seizures. We had to get rid of her because my moms boyfriend is allergic to cats, and at the time we were moving in with him (we moved back out, YAY, back to that same apartment, but now we are getting a house (even bigger YAY). We also got two rabbits, which turned into something like eight (we thought we had two females, we thought wrong). We only have two now, between giving most of the litter away, the male being put to sleep, and one which I kept snapping his neck trying to get out of his cage (one of the most horrible experiences of my life, when I brought him to my mothers she would let him run around and be free all day, but at my dads I couldn't do that even though I wanted to since I shared a room with my stepbrother, he got used to the freedom (I had told my mom not to do that, but it was too late. He had been popping his cage top by jumping into it, I ended up bungeeing it shut, but one night he went nuts and popped it open. His neck was broken, and his spinal cord severed, I am not sure whether I did it or not, but I really miss that little guy, he was a very gentle rabbit.) Right my mother and I are keeping two rabbits (the original mother and one of the daughters) and a basset hound-beagle mix, a serious abuse case which we managed to raise well and he ended up being a really gentle dog, although he is still a bit defensive of his space when there are a lot of people around (he will go after feet if people accidentally nudge him), we have broken him of most of his bad habits (including a really nasty snapping reflex when you touched him when he was sleeping, a very nasty way to wake up when he was sleeping with you). He is a real cuddler though, he just LOVES to get up with you and "groom" you (which involves repetitive licking of the same area for as much as 15 min at a time, which is when I get fed up and make him stop). Aside from one disgusting thing, which he has no control over, he is a great dog. Sorry about the length, but once I got started I felt like talking about my animals, if only to remember them.

Mani, Brandy sounds like an amazing dog. How lucky she was to have you in her life. :)

Raptor, thank you for sharing about your animals. It takes a special human being to help an animal that has suffered abuse.

Now your all going to make me miss the dog I had growing up.

She was a German Sheppard/Blood Hound cross names Miss Bean. I'll have to find a picture and scan it now.

  20. i dont really have many pictures

of most of my animals. I could probably find some if I hunted, but I dont really know where to look. Oh, and Queen, it helped a LOT that he was really a very sweet dog at heart. BTW GreatDane, that is a VERY unusual mix, which means it was either a really cool looking dog or ugly as sin :).
