My Position on Xbox One

Whilst I do realise people wanted to talk about the Xbox One during ops last night, Sentrosi’s and GraniteRok's comments about comms discipline are still fresh in my mind, so I’ve created this thread to tackle the announcement.

I can’t say I’m happy about the lack of backwards compatibility for 360 titles, or the additional fee you need to pay after you’ve bought a used game. I see some reservations for having Kinect in-the-box as well, particularly if you don’t have the space to use it, though I can understand asking people to pay a fee for using games already registered on another XBL account.

For improvements, prior generations of the Xbox 360 have totally interfered with set-top boxes, so it should be interesting if they’ve refined their app. Perhaps if you are a Sky/Cable customer, you can use your console to watch all your channels through it – that would be great for people who already have Sky Multiroom and don’t want to pay another £10 a month per box. I also like the host of improvements to Kinect’s infrared camera, but we’ll have to wait and see if it now allows dark-skinned players to use it.

Last but not least, we come to games... Remedy's new offering looks interesting; my bets are on a time-travel flick rather than simply a Beyond: Two Souls-competitor that most believe it to be. It was also nice to know that Halo will be getting a series, provided the production costs aren't so through the roof that it gets cancelled like Spielburg's last television show.

As for the eternally self-righteous boffins at EA, I'm still waiting to be impressed.

I'm not much of a consoler. Haven't been really since the Playstation2. Once they put in the thumb joysticks on controllers, I lost the touch on controller action. I don't have very good dexterity with the thumbs. With that, my console days went poof as everyone since and including the PS2 had main controls using thumbsticks.

As for the Xbox One, I don't see me getting one here. Above is my main reason but Hynch mentions a huge "Con" point to it, not backwards compatible to previous games. My reading about this console, it seems they're hyping the TV part of it a lot with gaming is a sidebar addition.

I think the fee on reselling games is necessary because the discs will not be required or need disc checks after installation to facilitate the instant gaming, so they need something to prevent users from installing it on all their friends machines and a way to de-register the game from your account when it is sold.

IMHO backwards compatibility was a bonus with the current generation of consoles and spoiled some users not of the generation of not having backwards compatibility in consoles. I still have my original Xbox and a bunch of games, a few I have tossed into the 360 to play a bit, but the poor graphics and lack of features or broken features of those games don't bring the nostalgia like when I hook up my Atari, NES, etc. The 360 will still be relevant enough to just keep my 360 hooked up if I want to play 360 games.

The new Kinect is higher resolution with a wider fov, so small rooms should be more usable. I'm hoping it works with larger rooms better, my couches and recliner are just out of range of our sensor so it doesn't detect me waving frantically at it.

I'm waiting to see more about e3, but if it plays nice with all cable companies, i'll probably get it just for the media center aspect of it.

The TV integration shouldn't have any interference or interaction with the cable companies. Your cable companies provided box plugs into the Xbox instead of the TV and become just a pass through, same way GoogleTV works.

I'm in an odd position concerning this upcoming console generation. I'm actually more interested in the multimedia aspects of the One than I am the gaming capabilities. The PC is my primary gaming platform, and while I'll likely play some select social games on the new Xbox, it will primarily by my family room HTPC.

As far as backward compatibility goes, I couldn't care less. I've always said "If I want to play my old games, I'll keep my old system hooked up."

I agree on both points.

The Xbox 360 in our house can be used with Sky to a point; compared to that of the old Xbox, its power supply creates a haze of interference whilst it's switched on that seems to interfere with them. It's the same with the Wii, except with that you to completely reset set-top boxes.
