  1. http://www.wintroniccomputers.com/

if you go to the parts part of the website, you'll notice that a P4 2.66 w/ 533mhz bus 512k is $389 (keep in mind prices are in canadian dollars)

AMD XP2800+ is $580. Now, is it just me or does this seam a huge price hike? The two chips, as far as I know are prety much compairable. The P4 has 533 bus even, while the AMD is only at 333? (I think) So explain to me why anyone would by the AMD over the Intel P4.

I could also use sugestions on which MB, case and RAM to buy. I was thinking Asus Deluxe for $209, 1G of DDR400 PC3200 and the Antec mid tower with 430W PS.

    Opionions appreciated =)

PS I am running a P4 1.7 with 512 MB RD ram (Rambus) and a GF4 4400 TI 128 MB. I figure I'd most benefit from the above upgrades as I can't afford to upgrade everything right now, and I believe my Video card will do just fine for PS

  2. I would say that your current system has enough power as it is. You might want some more ram, but that's about it really. You've got the power to run pretty much anything already.

  3. AMD has jacked the price up a lot. I have always been an Intel "fanboy" for say but they are great chipsets.

I bought a P4 2.53 ghZ processor and a ASUS P4T533-C mobo for 350-400 and it is awsome. I bought it at http://www.newegg.com

I currently have the 2.53 chip upto 2.85 with load temps only hitting 40-41 deg C (105 deg F)

I will be trying to get that chip upto 3.0 this week :)

make sure you have 512MB of ram or higher and you will be set.

  4. Yikes! Looks like its the company is trying to price gouge for that proc. Newegg has the same processor, retail even, for about $230 less then that site.

I would think you would run fine with the setup you have. Mine is similar except I use AMD XP2000 which is ~1.6Ghz I belive. 512 ram and a G4 4400 TI. I have hardly any problems with the exception of the memory leaks. The only thing I plan on upgrading is getting another 512 stick.

  5. I just got the Athlon XP 2800+ less than a week ago for $360 USD. I dunno what that translates to in Canadien cash but that seems way high unless it's a Barton. Could be an error on the website.

  6. Yea that site is Canadian dollars. Throws me off everytime I check it.

I really don't think picking either AMD or Intel makes a huge difference. The quality of the MB makes a huge difference. I will never, ever, ever, ever buy a Via chipset again. Thank God Nvidia got into making AMD chipsets. I hope Via goes out of business. They couldn't design a mb chipset without a million incompatibilities to save their life. This is after I've had Via's for the last 3 years.

I gave Merc my suggestion on a AMD setup from that site. But really I'd say if you could upgrade what you got any at all I would. Can you put in a faster P4? Say a 2.4 or 2.2, something without the /533 mhz bus ofcourse. This along with a video upgrade may be a solid way to go. But all depends on when you want to upgrade next. I do small upgrades constantly. But for people that want to buy one system to last a year or two then get about the best system you can get.

  7. I usualy stagger my system upgrades and my video upgrades. I am prone to spend a lot of money on video cards, so I can't afford both at the same time usualy =) As for upgrading my current machine, the major issue is ram. I'd be happy if I could just upgrade the ram to 1 gig for now however I am running Rambus and as you know the damn sticks for that are expensive. And I currently have 4 126 sticks which fills up all the slots so oly way to go to a gig would be to buy 2 512s which would cost me an arm and a leg. So I figure I'd go to a new MB and DDR ram. I've never overclocked and as I see it you need to overclock an AMD to get your moneys worth. So I'll probably go the Intel way, I just need to find me a good intel MB now. I saw a nice one by SiS so I may go that route, it supports AGP 8x aswell as dual ram chanells. I'd just like to find some other ones that compaire to it, doing research now. What do you all think about Intell MB chipsets? They seam to have some nice ones too.

  8. Intel chipsets are great as long as you're not going to overclock anything.

  9. Intel chips can o/c great, i remember when p4 2.2's came out and ppl had the things going at 3 ghz. Serious cooling ofcourse. And if you actually ran your chip this oc'ed for a long time the chip's life spane would go down the toilet.

The MSI 655 Max (SiS 655-Dual Channel DDR400) looks like one of the top performing Intel boards atm. I'd also be happy to bench my system against yours when its finished and see if a slower AMD really is better than a faster Intel.

  10. Daleon, I just put together a Athlon XP 2800+ system running @ 2.25 ghz. I scored over 4600 on 3DMark03. I dunno what rig you're running but feel free to compare.

    Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo
    Athlon XP 2800+ @ 2.25ghz
    1 gig pc2700 ddr ram
    Creative Soundblaster Audigy2 soundcard
    Radeon 9700 Pro All-in-Wonder
Western Digital 80gb 8mb buffer hdd

  11. Heh, nice. I'd go up against you Groovie sure. You have me beat though with the 9700.

    My rig currently sits at:

    Thermaltake Xaser III 2000A
    Asus A7N8X Deluxe
    AMD XP2400 Tbred
    Thermaltake MCX462+ /w 80mm Tornado
    ATI 8500 non-LE 64
    2x256 Corsair XMS PC3500
    100 Gig WD
    80 Gig WD
    Pioneer A04 DVD-R
    Lite-On 40x CDRW
    530 Enermax PSU
    Logitech MX700
    Logitech Wingman Force 3D

Chip is clocked at 2.2 ghz right now. I haven't bothered with 3dmark 2003 yet b/c I know the 8500 will choke on it but I'll give it a try. Putting out about 10500 3D marks in 2001SE. I'm either gonna pick up a 9700 Pro cheap or wait till about the end of this month to see if they annouce a 9800 Pro with 256 DDRII or not. If they don't gonna go on and get the 128 version. Thought about switching out cpu with a Barton 2500 but gonna wait till they go to 400mhz bus.

  12. Oh, don't get me wrong, the chips themselves can be overclocked like any, but the motherboards (chipsets) intel designs/makes are basically impossible to do the overclocking on.
