Söldner: Secret Wars

Discussion in 'Upcoming Games Discussion' started by Derfud, 31 Dec 2003.

  1. Recently I just picked up the latest issue of PC gamer. I noticed they had a scoop, for "Söldner: Secret Wars", a team-based, online shooter, that is taking place in the near future, where the government's of the world are completely bankrupt, and many small-scale wars are being fought. That simple premise is only the backdrop to what looks like an amazing game. Everything in Söldner is destructable, a welcome change from the invincible, static wooden BF1942 houses that can withstand a tankshell. They explain in the article that one tactic they saw being employed, was lifting a tank with a VTOL Osprey aircraft, and dropping through the roof of a building "A rude surprise for campers" it says. Also, there are about 60 real-world weapons, and about 70 real-world vehicles from both NATO, and the eastern blocs. Another great thing is the ability to customize your söldner (German word for mercenary) in almost any way you like. There are also several different classes you can play as, which have varying effects on your firepower, and the like. Take all these things, put them on a 2-million square mile map (taken from the ad), add in nukes (thats right ladies, and gentlement, I said nukes), and you get Söldner: Secret Wars, a package that seems "too good to be true".

  2. ok....this sounds pretty good.....Then again it doesn't take much to impress me with FPS's. The whole.....camp and you may get a tank dropped on you...is a good idea. then again....dont' even have to drop the tank on them cause you could drive through the wall's ;)

Is it just me? Or does it seem like this game is lacking a lot of information for how soon it is planned to be released?

I like how you can customize the server game type some what like Halo for Xbox all through a web browser.

    No it dosen't!!

You need to load the map, no biggie. Then you need to download the carnage before you finish loading the map. Depending how the distructable the world is, you could end up needing to download 1, 2, 5 10, 40, 50, 100 meg in a very short period of time... Sure a couple of meg isn't so bad, but that can change quick!

Just think, waiting 5 minutes (on cable) to download the map just to find out that last player slot was filled while you waited.... or even better, having the population of a server fall down around the 1 or 2 mark while the other 30 players are trying to join...

  15. I think that they are going for a predetermined damage model for the environment, i.e. firing a rocket at the same house makes the same sized hole everytime, as opposed to something like Doom3, where everything is dynamic. Of course, even if everything is reduced to a toggle (destroyed/undestroyed), since every house, bush, tree and even the ground in a 2 mile area is destroyable, thats going to be a lot of toggles to send to new players.

I just played the single player Farcry demo, and I must say I was very disappointed. The game doesn't seem to have anything revolutionary, and the AI that has been so hyped is nothing special. So now its either Soldner or back to PlanetSide.
