I took my Daughter to her first Tae Kwon Do tournement this morning. We where hoping she would place in Forms. 8 girls in her class range (green belt).

She placed 2nd in Sparring!!! I was so happy (she wanted to spar, we wanted her to do good in forms!)

  2. Your little girl is adorable, Otto. Tell her congrats from Groovie.

  3. When her name was called did she have to slap the ground and make a mean sound?
That is what i looked forward to the most when i was young :p

They don't slap the ground. ATA is differant than when I took it to. We used to have to go up and announce to the Judges who we where and what school we represented. Then we had to do the form and thank them and stuff. Now they call you, you answer Yes Sir then you go up, bow and they tell you to begin.

I have 2 kids in it, my 6 year didn't want to compete.

The one thing you can't see in the picture, her hair is in a poney with each of the belt colors in order (white, orange, yellow, camo and green) She is doing that for each level so that you can see the progression she has taken (her Idea!) it's really cool.

Otto, she's a cutie. Good thing you're letting her have lessons in martial arts so she can fight off the boys later.

Awsome technique on those head kicks in sparring!

I'm in WTF. Styles are a little different. I enjoyed the pictures. :)

BTW, we have to answer with a loud, confident, "Yes sir," when we are called to the mat by a judge.

We have to Answer really loud to. When I took it (18 years ago!) we would answer YES SIR! then when we stopped in front of the judges we would say:

Sirs, Full Otto from Arlo's accademy of Tae Kwon Do, Permission to perfomr (form name), SIRS. Making eye contact with each judge, they would answer, Granted, you may begin. We would respond, Thank you sir, bow, go to ready stance and begin. Then we would thank them when we where done.

Mr Poole is bringing some of that back to the school we are in now. He is from the old school (that is what they say about us that where in it before ATA was firmly established)

She is really good, but was nervous as heck! First time out. I want her to do weapons next (she does to) but few will teach them unless your black belt or higher (I have Butterfly knifes (not the ones you buy at the gun shows but the big fat blades), Butterfly Sword with blade catchers and ribbons, Bo, Si's (sp), 3 piece staffs and chucks) Soon as we start taking Jo lessons I can replace it with my sword.

If anyone else has kids, you should get them signed up and take it with them! It is great, we all have a blast doing it and it is great excersice, Confidence builder and self defense!

  8. pretty cool pretty cool. not bad for competition.

im currently taking classes again with my step daughter, not in TKD but in wushu. i learned straight sword, spear, staff, 3 sectional about ten years ago, never kept up with it. i was studying tkd and various kung fu styles at the time.

my current instructor is kenny perez. pretty cool guy to work with. he'll be writing an article for 'inside kung fu' magazine until the 2008 olympics. he'll also be on the cover of the next magazine. classes aren't as easy as they used to be for me(i coulda swore i used to do butterfly kicks, now i resemble a bumble bee), but it'll get easier in time...hopefully

    :)

Bo staff is absolutely incredible. We have a master who is amazing with that weapon and some of the forms he does with it just take my breath away.
