Best Sci-Fi

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Aeternus, 9 Sep 2004.

  1. Ok...so I'm a Sci-Fi fan...and the whole Trek MMO thread got me going....

I'd have to say that, in my opinion, the top sci-fi tv shows are - and probably in this order:

    Babylon 5
    Stargate SG-1
    STNG

Going beyond top three - for me at least - gets more fuzzy.

These are each different types of shows, but I think all are great...
Now i've not been able to follow some others...like DS9, which I think had some great story arcs - i.e. Dominion wars (even though it *may* have been *borrowed* from Bab5) - but I wasn't able to follow them.

  2. Im not that big in scifi but I've been watching a lot of Stargate SG-1 lately. That and the first couple seasons of Farscape are the only ones that I scheduled tv time for :p

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi t.v. shows they just never seem to match up to my expectations however if we were to discuss say a sci-fi book/book series I'd have to say Armor as my all time fav with Dune (the first book) in second place

  4. Great....A startrek MMO.....instead of killing ewok's we can kill ferengi...:\

I think Quantum Leap should be on the list. It wasn't your typical Sci-Fi show, but it was deffinatly a good one, and along the same line as Quantum Leap was Sliders which wasn;t that bad a show either.

From your list though I'm not sure if your looking for the top 5 ever, or just the more recent ones. If your looking for the best ever, then no list is complete without Battlestar Galatica.

Also one of the best Sci-Fi series I ever watched was "Above and Beyond", but it got cancelled after it's first season :(

I remember watching Battlestar Galactica reruns every day after I got home from middle school and then latter in the day my mom always wanted to watch Quantum Leap which I always thought was a little goofy but enjoyed it anyways

Well, For those of you in the 30+ age category you may remember a couple of my favs...

    1. Misfits of Science -I think this was Courtney Cox's first gig

    2. "V" - Can't beat any show where they eat mice regularly

    3. Automan - This one is a little more obscure guy could turn into a car
and had a little buddy name cursor(?) car could make
    90 degree turns

Indeed. I fell in love with Diana from V when she swallowed that mouse.

  9. maybe this is one that either didn't last or what...but i remember it from wheni was a kid...space 1999..i loved that show...anyone remember/know of it?

and i do remember misfits of science...wow...i had forgotten all about that show..heh..

  10. I agree Great Dane. I didn't really get to catch Battlestar Galactica due to my age (born 1980) although I do remember watching random reruns on the tube. It definately had a big impact on scifi and brought a lot of fans to the genre.

Above and Beyond was indeed a great show and I was also dissapointed at its cancellation. Those chiggers are still out there waiting to trounce on humanity. (I think thats what their nickname for the aliens was )

I guess when I think of Sci-fi, I tend to look to the Space Opera type shows (Bab5, Galactica, etc), as opposed to the more drama/adventure types in a sci-fi setting like Sliders or Quantum leap.

As far a V goes - i never got to really watch it when i was younger, but did get to see it over the past few years. It was ok...but i guess not experiencing it during its time takes away from it.

Farscape is another great show that I simply haven't had the opportunity to follow enough.

FireFly...if anyone else caught that last year, turned out to be a great show, but it too was cancelled prematurely.

But I would have to put Bab5 most definately as top on my list against any other sci-fi show. The arcing storyline was great, incredible special effects, great characters.... Those last few episodes were moving; I cried at the end of that series, and I can't say that I've done that for any other tv show.

edit: Ah... Crusade - yet another promising show cancelled before it could prove itself.

Farscape and Firefly. Simplistc scifi built around the charaters that don't always win and not the tech they use.

The origonl V miniseries was a lot better then the weekly series.

Firefly is fantastic...cancled, but great...good enough that they are filming the movie right now (grin).

Never got into Bab 5...just bothered me too much.

    My favorites are:

    Stargate SG-1
V (yup, the mouse thing is cool...fond memories (grin))
    Firefly

  14. Babylon 5 is one of my all time fav, with farscape, Stargate SG1, and Star Treck the Next Generation following it up.

As for books... Well, first off, Armor is a pretty good book, but no where near teh best i have ever read. The man has some talent, and I do wish I do wish I could see some more of his work, but definately not the best written story i have read, nor the most compelling storyline... overall, a good package, but certainly not the best.

My favourite sci-fi books to date are: Dune, the Hyperion/Endymion series by Dan Simmons (STRONGLY reccomended for anyone who likes to read, whether you like sci-fi or not), and the Northworld trilogy by David Drake. This is by no means an exhaustive listing... I own well over a hundred sci-fi books myself, and have taken lord knows how many more out of the library :p.

  15. V rocked. I remember the weekly series but yes the mini-series was by far better.

    My faves? Hmm tough one.
    V (mini series)
Quantum Leap (loved the episodes where Scott Bakula played the black machine gunner with his brother in Vietnam)
Mystery Science Theater 3000 - not your typical scifi but hey - how can you beat someone mocking cheesy scifi/horror flicks??

  16. Well -
We've got some good ones here. I remember 'V' and thought it was just "Okay". Perhaps if I had seen it from the start I would have appreciated it more.
    - I think Trek TOS (The Original Series) is at the top. Reasons - (all "Kirk-Fu" combat aside....) It was truly colorful and the episodes were actual stories, not written by a committee.

    - TNG was barely palatable for the first 1-2 seasons. Only Jean-Luc and his use of profanity made it worth my while. When the Klingons got more involved, then I started to dig it.

    - DS9 (see above)

    - Voyager - This was a great idea, but it failed in execution. One would think that whomever devised the concept was not a member of the writing team.

    - Space 1999 Yes, Test, I remember this~! I thought it was *very* cool~! Using the moon as an "accidental spaceship" was a new idea~! And a shape-shifter as a regular. ;)

    - Bab5 Wow. It had a beginning, middle and end. Amazing what you can do when one person writes it. I've never understood why this was the only Sci-Fi show (save TOS, and correct me if I'm wrong) where past events that happened in one episode, had shockwaves / surfaced in later episodes~!

    - Farscape rocked~! It was just plain fun~! Not a lot of deep-seated thought behind it (i.e. it was made for enjoyment~!) and it had some very colorful characters in it~! I'd consider it just this side of 'camp'.

    - Quantum Leap I admit that this was a brilliant piece of work that actually captured a large portion of the female viewers as well, but I just found it okay.

    - There are others and, I must confess that I really enjoyed the 'cliffhanger' every episode, and the (sometimes very weak) James Bond witticisms, and his failed bluff attempts all the time, but golly. I really enjoyed Dr. Who. :D

So, my votes are (perhaps for the 40+ plus crowd)
#1. Star Trek The Original Series : (this one really launched sci-fi into prime time.)
#2. Babylon 5 : Awesome plot and story line. Straczynski killed his characters, and I used to do a pretty good Ambassador Molari imitation~! (‘nuff said~! ;) )
#3. Dr. Who : British series. Thoughtful, made on a shoestring budget (like TOS) and golly, if I had to explain it…you wouldn’t understand. ;)

Books? Gosh, I've read so many. The sci-fi book that has meant the most to me was (is) DUNE.

How could we have all overlooked one of the classic Sci-Fi series/charecters of all time? That's right, we should all be ashamed to have forgoten.....

    Buck Rogers.

  18. "Bede-bede-bede. Howzit goin' Buck?"

While Erin Grey knew how to wear her clothes, we also learned that Princess', don't start spaceships

    Go figure. ;)

  19. i know each and everyone of these...i think i am one of you...not sure how i should feel...frightened, confused....and "momma, am i home?"

    i think i need a drink...

  20. You guys missed the most classic Sci-Fi. UFO, where else can you get cool toys that blow up faceless aliens in spinning saucers. And where when the women go to the moon their hair turns purple. :D

    My list
    1. Star Trek TOS
    2. Star Trek TNG ( I agree with Pump on this)
    3. Farscape (which returns next month)
Stargate SG1 or Bab5 could be number 3.
