Black Mesa Source

  1. Since Half-Life 2 was launched alongside the Source Engine, the online community has been abuzz with gamers making new stories but, if you're like me, and have been patiently awaiting the remake of Half-Life with this technology, you'll know it feels like it's been in development for 50 years!

Well, finally it's due for release. At 10am EST on Friday, people will at last get to see what about a decade of work brings when it will be ready for download on Valve's new "Steam Greenlight" service... you don't even need Orange Box to play this game; simply download the Source SDK Base 2007 using the Steam client.

Players can find out more about the game here, or can watch the countdown and purchase the soundtrack at their official site.

  2. Ok, so it turns out that BMS will not be released on Steam right now. Instead there are links below from a filesharing site as well as a torrent-mirror, which is about 3.8GB after installation:

    FileShack: = http://www.shacknews.com/file/32999/black-mesa-source-10-windows-free-game
    BiTorrent: = http://205.196.122.222/jd996k3xv3fg/khmzyygg4vetko0/BlackMesaNewTrackers.torrent

In case you've played Half-Life before and know just how bad it actually was, this video might also convince you to give BMS a chance, created by the boffins at GameFront:

  3. I've been playing it and oooh my the nostalgia! Definitely worth it. Unfortunately the last level "Xen" is not complete. But everything up to it is professionally done.

Note that once you install it, it will show up on your steam games list.

  4. I've had to adjust my post here, as since I don't spend my waking hours on the website (especially with an update only appearing once every six months), I have slightly embarrassed myself on their forums!

Apparently, Xen and Black Mesa Deathmatch are not included in this release, even though to some degree, the game can be played all the way through with a suitable ending.
