First, thanks to everyone for the help with the name. Whether positive or negative, it actually helped us shape the identity.

So far my new business is going well. The logo is almost done and looking good. Lot of interest in what we can do. Until I get the logo and cards printed up, I'm not pushing the name too hard. The problem with the cards are that with who we are aiming for, we have to go that extra step and do foil, die-cuts or embossing. Designers look for these touches to separate the serious from the hobbiest.

I'm trying to blog some to build up the content on the site. Our SEO is already kicking in. By the time I'm done, our site will be a mountain of authority that the competition will never be able to overcome.

After the logo is done, the plan is to put in a ecommerce site as an example of what we can do. Everything in it will be branded with our logo and tie into Zazzle. Should be slick to see skateboards with our logo.

    Thanks.

Yeah I've put a couple blog type entries in. The problem is I have to build authority to the search engines and make them readable too.

A client has suggested an article talking about how you want to hand your web stuff over to pro's, not to the guy that has just done his churches site.

Trying to figure out how to couch that.

  6. By search engine optimization Im assuming you mean google optimization :p

They're pretty much correct, altho they probably should have phrased it differently. Its for the same reason good money managers hire tax lawyers. You're basically paying someone to handle the obscurities.

Things that may seem like common sense to you as a developer will make your SEO guys crap themselves.

One example from recent personal experience: My employer rebranded the company, including a complete domain change and all that. No big deal, companies do this all the time. The execs wanted to convert the old site's traffic and search rank into traffic and search rank for the new site, so they wanted all the old stuff redirected. What our SEO guys forgot to tell us was that you have to set up a 301 redirect for each file and page manually. We just redirected the entire root directory, which made sense to us since that meant that any request would get directed to the new site.

Unfortunately, the old site had been on the net for 11 years. When we did this, all of these old, dead links to content on the old site, which google had cached, went from dead 404s to live 200s on a different domain. Google penalized us for that pretty hard.

Actually you can 301 redirect from your 404 page. Since it isn't a 404 until you tell the requestor it was. I do a quick look for a known page from a database and if I get a hit, I do a 301 redirect to the new content.

Download Xenu Link Sleuth. I run it against a site to find all the busted graphics and links. You can right click on any busted link and it will tell you what called the busted item.

I thought I knew SEO. A couple years ago I went to training at Bruce Clay and found out I didn't jack. Which is great. Since I know my local competition is clueless with SEO.
