Cool VPN App- and free!

  1. http://www.hamachi.cc/

creates a vpn and has almost no configuration necessary - literally. a buddy of mine came across it and we've used it to play starcraft (bnet doesn't like it when you've got multiple users on a lan trying to play a session with peeps via internet) as it fools the network into thinking we're all on a lan. works great. You can also do file sharing as if on a physical lan, and i suppose anything else you'd want to do with a vpn, although i've not really spent much time on it.

  2. Dude....
I'd be a little cautious regarding this. I went to the site and read up a little bit on this. I'm getting a feeling regarding security issues here...and the feelings are not good.

  3. A Few of us have been using this to play Titan Quest Lan sessions.

Can you elaborate a little more on why you get a bad vibe from this Pump?

  4. Well, Hamachi is supposedly secure, although I'm not an expert on cryptography or security....

To echo Arg...what is it more specifically that you're having problems/bad feelings about Pump?

  5. Sorry about the delay -

I've only done a casual read on the link this morning, so here are my thoughts on the matter. Take them for what they are worth and remember remember, I can be a bit cynical...

#1) Zero config?!?! (That's mighty strange)

#2) It says it's using a PGP Like secure protocol (But I don't know exactly what protocol(s) it's using, such as IPSEC, etc...)

#3) Messages are encrypted with symmetric cipher algorithm and authenticated with MAC (Does this mean they are recording your MAC address? I'd consider this a personal security issue.)

#4) It looks like a "premium subscription" service which requires their servers to locate your peer VLAN network, so it must run on some type of 'heartbeat' setup, allowing *their* servers can find your DHCP client (ie.. you'll be broadcasting "Hey Hamachi Server... Come violate me!...I'm RIGHT HERE!!")

    Later -

RealVNC is trustworthy. There are various flavors of it around. You can even do cross platform stuff with it. I control a mac with a PC and vice versa.

  7. i looked at the RealVNC site...and perhaps i misread...but the free version isn't even encrypted...so how is that more secure than Hamachi, which uses 256 AES?

As for Pump's concerns...i suppose they are valid to an extent...but...
    1) - A good program can have next to no configuration if its intelligently designed without being malicious. Its called user friendly.
    2) The fact that they don't give away the exact protocol they use, in my mind, would be a good thing, as you don't know exactly where to start hacking it

As for 3 & 4 - tell me what internet/networking related program doesn't use information that could potentially make u vulnerable? For that matter, the moment u install a Microsoft operating system, you give away more system info than Hamachi will use.

Anyway, that's how i see it at least.

  8. I'm don't use Hamachi to send secure info, I use it to emulate a lan to play games on, I also don't store any vital information on my gaming PC, so if someone wants to peek inside, go for it.

...have access to one box on a net and have access to them all...

also just because you think you don't have any vital info on your gaming pc doesn't mean there isn't something someone could use somewhere on there.

and I agree with pump on the zero configuration needed statement not all computers are anywhere near alike and to program something to accomidate all of them is near impossible.

Depends on the flava. The basic VNC is just an interface. It is open source so there are a lot of versions out there.

  11. Hamachi is 100% secure - been using it for months. Steve Gibson of Shields-Up and Spinrite, (a long time security expert) has endorsed this and has done podcasts where he explains this in great details. It's a great way to create a VPN across firewalls and other obsticles. Ideal for gaming and other uses.

If anyone wants more info on this, let me know. I'll be happy to point you to the podcasts where Hamachi is explained in great detail. :D

  12. Well...now that Mars has endorsed it...i guess this thread is closed ;) ... booyah (as Pump would say)
