External Hard Drive

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Strygun, 9 Mar 2008.

  1. Hey folks,

I currently have a home-made 300GB hard drive. (By home made, I mean I bought the drive and the casing separately and put them together.)

The casing has a built-in fan, which is nice because it keeps the drive cool. However, it is rather loud for such a small fan, which makes me keep the drive turned off unless I need it to be on. I would like to have it constantly on, because my Windows Media Center records television quite often. The recordings are rather large in size (a few gigs each), so I would like them to record directly to the external than my internal. This means that I have to have the drive on whenever a scheduled recording is coming up.

I say all of this to say the following:

Does an external hard drive really need a fan? Should I buy a new casing that doesn't have one so that the drive will be silent?

Heat is the enemy of a hard drive hehe, most of the ones you buy at the store pre-built have a small fan in em that are pretty quiet. I wouldn't recommend running one without a fan.
