  1. It finally happened. My computer couldn't take all the data my family kept on putting on it and it figuratively exploded, sort of like the 'fat man in the restaurant' scene in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. At last count, we had 102 gigabytes of data in the Documents and Settings folder alone.

So the machine finally choked on it's own data, and we had to reformat. We saved most of the D&S stuff, but all the programs and extra doodads are gone. Reinstallation of the CDs we got lying around will take awhile, I suspect, but it gives me a little break from PC addiction.

On the plus side, now my parents are finally considering a gaming machine (somewhere in the $800-1000 range... maybe) for me only, and maybe an e-mail/office machine for my mom ("You can play Grand Theft Auto, but I have to check my email first"). Overall, this whole thing could've been a whole lot worse.

Cyas all in WoW this weekend!

just make sure you don't go overboard on your moms pc it pisses me off when I see someone who uses their computer for nothin more than surfing the web and word processing. like my friends mom (doctor) who bought a dual proc machine a new nvidia 6800 two of those fancy raptor drives and like 4 gigs of ram....and the most she does on it is excel....wtf!

You can do some serious number crunching with Excel + 4GB of ram....

    But seriously....

Have your parents look into building the PC from the ground up. You can get a really nice rig for $1000 if you buy the parts yourself and build it yourself. Plus you get the added satisfaction of knowing that, once you press that POWER ON button the first time and everything boots up, you've done a hell of a good job.

If you need help w/ price and part recommendations, hit me up. Let me know what your budget is and I'll get you the parts that'll make your gaming machine a true gaming machine. Just a word of caution; don't expect anything like dual 7800GTs and 4GB of Ram.

I built an "ultimate gaming machine" this past september with only 1500$. Includes 4 gigs of ram, 7800, raptor 76g hd, and other necessities. Oh yeah it's a pentium 4 630. I can't remember the motherboard offhand - it's an MSI diamond edition something...

  6. AMD processors burn Intel in the gaming department, AMD processors averaging usually a 15%-25% performance increase over it's Intel counterpart. Intel is king of multitasking and number crunching IMO, but for a gamer, AMD is the place to be.
