Those of you that have been following Blizzard since the release of Warcraft III: Reigns of Chaos should know that Patrick Wyatt, Jeff Strain, and Mike O'Brien who were vital to the successes of Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft III. Left Blizzard a bit before Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne came out to start a new company called ArenaNet. They are now making a MMORPG that has NO MONTHLY FEES. This RPG is supposed to be competitive and will reward the player on skill and tactics rather than time spend playing. More can be read about in the recently released February 2004 PC Gamer. Bottom line: visually the game looks great, and the no fee thing is nice....... however, I have read most of the interviews and when they discuss how they can offer the no fee and how the server/world will work.... something sounds off....... It will be interesting to see how it will work when it is released.

yes I know what you mean I don't understand what they mean when they say "...our streaming technology allows us to adopt an expansion model" Though they say that they plan to have an xpack for the game every 6 months, so my guess is that might basically make up for the fee.

  4. Well, somehow blizzard managed to have a huge BNET network, which probably had thousands of people connected to it, and they didnt charge a monthly fee.

There is a 4 page article in the May PC Gamer. Game sounds and looks even more amazing than before. Diablo style + team play + awesome graphics + no monthly fee = wet pants. I have a good feeling that this game is going to make the upcoming MMO's heads turn.

Doh, I don't think I've gotten that issue yet :( I love the "glow" effect they use to make the world look so vibrant. Definitely looking foward to giving this a try.

  13. I've been checking out guild wars for a while now. We'll see, I don't think its got a real chance at 2004 release. But its defintely got some good ideas behind it. But so did Horizons a few years ago.

There is a very interesting "event" going on. In June 2004 PC Gamer's CD you can install the guild wars demo that will be shown during E3. Apparently you will be able to play along with people at the E3 booth. Too bad you can only play it from May 11th midnight to May 14th midnight.

  15. You can get the client on their main page. The opening screen to create your account is rather impressive for a window. Very smooth, awesome weather and fire effects. Can't wait to try this.

  16. Heh, try a combined server load for all of battle nets games in the hundreds of thousands on average. Blizzard has done VERY well for itself.

I was reading about this game. It looks very nice. Is someone keeping a close eye on its development? We may want to take a closer look at this when it gets close to beta or release.

I like the idea of guild vs guild in this type setting along with the limited abilities you take into a fight. Interesting way to do the battle. No fee to play is also appealing. ;)

  18. I'm hoping to get into the Beta when it comes around, so yeah I'm watching it close :)

As for the streaming technology we got to see this in the E34E event when we got to play the game (Alpha there of) from our homes. Myself and a few friends got in. Basically, instead of the EQ "Start up and Patch" methodology the game streams content to you as you are playing.

I've seen it - it was impressive. The simplest way to think of it is in EQ it takes me 5-8 minutes to get up and into a server. With GW I'd be in a group and working a mission, soloing, or whatever - by then.

Just don't expect a traditional MMORPG - It isn't one, its more fun IMO. :)

  19. Incoming free event in October! For those that may have missed it - GW World Preview Event!

Guild Wars World Preview Event Announced

Pre-order product to be available in stores in September; beta period starts in October

Bellevue, WASH., August 9, 2004 - ArenaNet™, creators of the highly anticipated online role-playing game Guild Wars™, and NCsoft® the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games, today announced that they will host a World Preview Event October 29-31, officially kicking off the game’s beta period. During the World Preview Event game players from around the world will be invited to play Guild Wars and enjoy exciting cooperative quests, challenging competitive play and robust guild support.

Guild Wars will be available for pre-order in September. Subsequent monthly beta events will allow gamers who purchased the pre-order product to return to play the Guild Wars beta during the first weekend of each month.

“Beta events are a unique way for players to get a taste of Guild Wars and participate in the crucial beta process,” Jeff Strain, Guild Wars producer and ArenaNet co-founder said. “We welcome feedback from the millions of players invited to join the events and plan to incorporate their input as we polish, tune and balance the game.”

The October World Preview Event is the second time players have been invited to play Guild Wars. The May 2004 “E3 for Everyone” event drew more than 200,000 players from more than a dozen countries who experienced Guild Wars first hand.

Guild Wars, a competitive online role-playing game that rewards player skill, is the first title from ArenaNet, which was founded by key members of the creative teams behind the hit games Warcraft®, StarCraft® and Diablo®, and the creators of Battle.net®. In large, head-to-head guild battles, cooperative group combat and single-player missions, players explore a fantasy world while pursuing professions and acquiring skills to develop their own personalized characters. Missions are not scripted adventures, but are open battlegrounds where victory is determined by skill and teamwork.

More information about the October World Preview Event and subsequent monthly beta events will be provided at http://www.guildwars.com.
