My sound just stopped working over night! I went to play some COD4 and there was no sound:( . So far I have checked windows updates, re-installed the drivers, checked the cables, re-booted a few times and went in the BIOS to make sure the sound was enabled. The card is 2 yrs old and I'm wondering if it just finally died on me? I'm not sure how long these things typically last.

Anyhow if anyone knows of anything else I could try before I throw in the towel and purchase a new card that would be awesome!

Have you done any updates in the last couple of days? Try rolling back your windows to last week and see if that clears it up. If that doesn't work, try installing the sound drivers for your motherboard. Chances are you won't need to run out and buy a new sound card. Since I upgraded/updated my system, I didn't bother with buying a new sound card and I love the quality my onboard sound brings out.

Thanks Sent. I'll give that a try tonight when I get home.

  4. Is it just in game or through windows and all applications? Could be something as minor as the wrong sound card being selected as default or hitting a mute button on your keyboard.

    It's through all apps.

OK first off thanks for the help Sent and Wheat. after 2 days of frustration I decided to plug my headphones into the jack where the speakers go. The headphones work perfect. My speakers are gone which is a good thing because I have been wanting to replace the cheap things for a long time. Any suggestions on speakers?

I was almost too embarrassed to post this hehe.

You wouldn't be razzed too much Rane. We all make mistakes like that. The other day I was convinced my wife's PC had taken a nose dive because it wouldn't turn on. After unplugging and plugging things into the mobo I noticed that the switch on the power supply itself got switched off for some reason.

What do you want to do with your new speakers? Do you want 5.1 Surround or do you want 2.1?

probably some descent 2.1. Going to look around and see what I can find for under $100.
