My friend's daughter, Amy, was driving home for Christmas from college in Wilmington, NC. On hwy 40 another car changing lanes to avoid a pedestrian almost hit her so she violently turned to miss it, losing control of her own car and causing her to swerve into the cable barrier in the median...which completely sheared off the top of her car from the dashboard up. What was left of her car wound up facing oncoming traffic.

The other driver that Amy swerved to avoid turned around and came back to make sure she was ok, and accepted full responsibility for the accident when police and ambulance arrived.

Amy walked away with a broken fingernail. That's a miracle.

Agreed! But Mrs. Mani might argue the broken fingernail.

  3. Good to know she is okay....
I had few near-misses earlier this week.

    1) A big black SUV entered the freeway at over 70 MPH speed (for you locals: heading south on 35W just past HWY62) and cross two lane of traffic to plow into me. The SUV was coming at me so fast that the nose of her vehicle was actually angled towards my lane~!!!!!!
I leaned on the horn, and swerved into the shoulder, when she hit her brakes and swerved back into the right lane of traffic. She then pulled behind me and even with an opportunity to pass – she stayed on my bumper until I left the freeway.

2a) I was heading East on HWY36 in the left lane. The Semi in front of me decided he didn't want me to pass and sped up. So, I looked to merge back into the right lane. An SUV was in that lane and he put on his blinker, and pulled into the right turn lane.
I turned on my blinker and began to merge into the right lane. Suddenly that SUV was there - I swerved back into my lane and as he passed me he gave me a dirty look.
I kept the cruise on, and sure enough, at the NEXT exit, the SUV yielded his spot by taking that exit. (Snelling Ave for you locals)

2b) Then, I exited south on Lexington Ave, just south of Roselawn Ave, a silver SUV slowed up and pulled on to the right shoulder and then, with NO blinker - made a hard left turn to cut across traffic to pull into a parking lot.

    …later in the day…

    3) I was on HWY 65, north of 694, on my way to pick up my son from Pre-school, when someone in a Pontiac Grand AM raced ahead of me to cut into my lane (Note: there was nobody within 8 car lengths behind me). Then braked severely because the light ahead of us had just turned green and traffic was only starting to move. As we proceeded along, the driver of the Grand AM continued to fumble with something in the passenger seat, and had a tendency to swerve. I turned on my blinker and began to pull into the Left turn lane, when she cut in the left turn lane THEN used her signal indicator.
I gave her plenty of space in the lane, (nearly an entire car length) then the light changed, we turned, then I took the first right, and the other driver continued on.
About two minutes later, I pulled into the school parking lot, and, being early, sat for a moment, listening to the radio. As I was shutting of the engine, the Grand AM pulled in next to me, the driver got out, gave me a scowl, then walked to the school.

At Lunch time, I informed my wife that I intended to remain home for the rest of the day…
