How to get paid

So the other thread got me thinking on how we, as a corporation, would be paying for services. Unfortunately, with very little to go on we can really only speculate at this point. But the conversation should start at least.

So how would a corporation as ourselves work to provide everything we need while also providing an income to our pilots/engineers/security force?

Well ideally I'd like to make enough money off of refining and trade to begin producing a space station or some sort of base where our pilots and personnel can gather in relative safety. If you ship is busted we would repair it. If it needed refueling or rearming we would do so. All this would be of no charge to members. Allied groups would get a discount, but would have to pay for our services.

    That's a global wide-angle view. On a more 'personal' view though it would go like this;
(I'm going to be using very arbitrary numbers here with no basis on fact. So please don't go off saying, "No way I'm getting paid that for this!")

I'm flying a Starfarer (crew of 2) and getting raw materials from a nearby star for fuel refining. Flying on my wing are three other pilots (solo seaters). With me on the Starfarer is an Engineer who is maintaining the ship. We finish the refining part and head to a local refueling station to sell our fuel. We run into no pirates or enemies along the way.

The station gives us 45,000 credits for the sale.
The mission cost us $10,000 credits for fuel consumption across all ships
Leaves us with a profit of $35,000

Automatic 60% of the profit goes into the corporation (Deposit of $21,000)
Leaves $14,000 to pay the 5 principles in the mission.
Giving each person a $2800 payday. For one mission. We very easily could get 5 or 6 missions in each day. That could easily add up.

    (Warining! HIGHLY SPECULATIVE AREA HERE)
You can earn money by doing Bounty Hunting missions, salvaging operations, 'selling' blueprints to the corporation, etc. There would be a charge for doing such operations outside of official corporate business though. I want to make money but I also don't want you to work yourself to death. I plan on being fair. Perhaps market value minus 20%.
(AGAIN, HIGHLY SPECULATIVE THOUGHTS HERE. BY NO MEANS ARE THESE NUMBERS TO BE TAKEN AS IF THEY ARE FINAL)

So using this idea, an individual pilot (like myself, for instance) could sell my product to your company, make use of repair facilities, and possibly pay for protection from pirates for a fair-market price. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

We know there will be missions pilots can undertake, which I'm guessing will provide income for anyone that wants to take them on. Hauling missions, combat missions, etc. As new systems and worlds are discovered more and more missions become available, and the economy grows. Even pirates raiding an established npc/player trade route can apparently spark missions as now the factory/stations will need those pirates removed.

So there's definitely sources of income for players out there for sure.

As for building a space station, or any kind of player built/controlled base, unless you've got a large contingent of players, I think that's a bit too far reaching. I mean, what's to stop a group say the size of IR coming and stomping us flat and taking over that station. All that hard work, lost. I think it's more realistic to assume we might participate in a joint venture with someone like IR to control an area of space or some station or asteroid mining outpost/etc.

As for costs and paying players, typically corporations/guilds from WoW to EVE had a form of "tax" that skims something off profits you make on quests/missions. Until we know how all that will work, it's a bit premature to figure out percentages. Particularly when, what if there are combat missions someone can pick up that will pay say $7500? If we're talking about paying people like employees, you're going to end up competing with anything that generates income in the game.

Suffice to say we'd have some framework for our corp making money, and everyone who participates gaining alongside it. Best methodology would be designing a way for both sides to profit well enough that players WANT to keep running missions/hauling/exploring so that that combined wealth grows. A bit too early at this point, I think, to get too specific.

Ingrained tax rates on certain things that might be part of corporation management features are one thing, trying to create a tax on players outside of that you may find problematic at best, and extremely drama-inducing at worst. Gotta be careful with how that's handled. The fine print details of how you can make much of this happen is probably quite a ways off.

Maybe a better branch off for this thread is "what kinds of things will we be able to do to make money, get equipment, etc." Compile a list of what we can do to get ahead in game.

Private Sector Security Force? I'm in, count Shewolf too, we charge double market value, but you get the best, and won't die or.....well....Shewolf will buy you a new ship :rawr:

  5. If I read correctly, the "space station" or our haven if you want will be in protected space unless we choose to move it. Now moving it we would run into the possible scenario quoted above, but I myself would need a good reason to move it

  6. I'm curious if the pay for transport runs is commensurate to the level of PvP risk you've selected?

Considering that the "pvp slider" will let you control how often you encounter other players while in any given sector, we can choose how much and how often we need wingmen to escort us on trade missions.

I should have expected you to chime in on this one, Lunar.

I guess that will depend on whether or not they let you build stations in secure space or will you have to go into newer territory to do so; not sure if they've said definitively one way or the other. You can already land and base off of established worlds and outposts, so it would stand to reason that we wouldn't be putting something of our own where that kind of facility already exists.

I imagine players will be building things like this near areas and resources they're exploiting, which likely means in new areas, which will mean the potential for pvp
