  1. This is really, really sad.

"Late last evening following the completion of a match involving two Los Angeles based teams a fight was initiated outside of the Gamers X LAN Center, host of the CXG Los Angeles Qualifier; upon learning of the disturbance Chris Hill of CXG, and my son, was asked to try and resolve the matter and stop the fighting; as he broke up the fight he and others were jumped by people associated with Team BZ. As Chris, and others attempted to calm the situation a member/associate of Team BZ ran to his car opened the trunk of the car grabbed a gun and placed it to the head of Chris Hill while other Team Members and associates encouraged the person with the gun to fire!"

    ...damn kids...

This truely did happen. My friend is working on CXG with Chris and his father.

The thing is, the press is trying to create some hype by going after something big. Tying this incident into video games in general gets attention. If they just blame it on some angry, mal adjusted kid, it doesn't get as much attention.

Enter the news machine! Selling themselves like prostitutes for the advertising dollars.

Yeah, news media..... I cannot say what I think about them. Its not polite.

  8. Through out the last hunderd years people have tired to blame other things for the actions of a few F***ed up losers. First it was comic books, then radio, then TV, then D+D, stand up video games, then Doom comes along and its all video games. I've used all these items in my life and I have yet to pull a gun or get into a fight over them. I've been drunk and almost gotten in to a fight but you don't hear to much about that now do you.

    Just a thought.

  9. I saw a TV spot on one of the evening tabloid news shows recently, it was blaming Doom for the Columbine shootings. Seems that one of the fruitcake kids was an avid Doom player. So that MUST have been why he went nuts.

The fact that his parents gave him practically all the money he needed with no love, supervision, attention or God had nothing to do with it I'm sure. They talked about how bad off he had it. They had recently released video of him and a few friends driving to school in his brandnew BMW he got for his 16th birthday. Poor kid.

That kid was an orphan to his parents success. They roamed the ski slopes while he sat at home with no guidance. One article I read stated that on his 12th birthday his parents had planned on going to Europe without him so to make it up they sent him a check for $3500. Very sad.

  10. Thats the problem with todays society....blame blame blame blame blame....These people have problems, and they were not created by a game, tv, etc. You go people all over the place blaming things on other people when the blame falls on themselves.

Take for example this RIAA stuff where they are sueing people that are d/l and distributing music. They are currently suing a 13 yr old girl for sharing over a thousand songs. Her mothers comments where along the lines of why don't they try going after the big site and programs that are distributing this stuff instead of an inocent 13 yr old girl that didn't know that it was illegal..

Some one needs to take these people and beat them or something. She, as a parent, has the responsibility of knowing what her 13 year old daughter is doing on her pc and they ARE attacking the programs as much as they can...the are P2P and have no base "company" to go after so they go after the people like this little girl that are "distributers".

    in summary:

QUIT BLAMING THINGS STUFF THAT WE ONLY HAVE OUR SELVES TO BLAM!!!!!

    /rant off

  11. (sigh)
Yes, sometimes it's seems a bad world out there - but we at -CDL- are going to make it all better...
    ;)

News is by nature, the 'reporting of the weird'. After all, nobody cares to read up on a bland, ordinary person. What excitement is contained in a normal person's day? Nothing when you've got a water cooler and an imagination. Even lies and rumors have a sliver of truth in them somewhere...
I find generally one "good" segment on one of the local news, a "Hometown Hero" segment.
As for the Network / Global news? Nothing 'good' there. Heck, other than Terriorist attacks, it's generally someone in some political hot-potato or an even more violent incident stemming from soccer games overseas.

When you boil it down, I feel that there truly is a lack of responsibility with folks. It can be depressing, and I'm no psycologist, but, when I was in Broadcasting school many years ago, I was repeatedly told (for making jokes) "No opinions on the news."
Huh. Even up here in the midwest, read between the lines, and you often read an opinion.

I remember Racewiz and I talked about this time and again. I once confided in him why I like the premise of STAR TREK better than STAR WARS. In STAR TREK the good inhabatants of Earth are all about bettering ones self and improving the measure of life with those around you. Where I believe that said "community" called The Federation is a grand Idea, I have serious doubts that we people of the Earth can reach that level of conciousness in a couple hundred years.
Now that I'm settled down, once the 'busy' season is over at work, I plan on attending city council meetings. It's always been of interest to me, but as a parent - doubly so. ;)
Well...I just heard the clock chime. It's midnight and that explains why I;m having such a hard time seeing the keyboard. (And I only had one beer...gosh).

Well...Thanx for taking the time on this. I hope this is a one time-deal for me, and I doint start the old "pontifications' as I did back in {DoB} :D

    G'nite...

  12. hey take two is getting threatend to be sued by the mayor of new york i think and some haitian group. because of one mission in the game grand theft auto: Vice ciy called "kill all the haitians" and they're sayning its related to teh several haitans that have been shot recently by the police in new york...

right there more passing the blame and refusing to look at the truth because its not as pretty as you think. Why did the haitians get shot by the police? were they doing something illegal, resisting arrest, were the police defending themselves... nah... they played a video game and viola dead haitians....

  13. I did see this -

Take-Two to Censor GTA: Vice City [12/10/2003 2:05:55 PM ET]
Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. has agreed to remove certain objectionable statements regarding Haitians from future copies of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Take-Two has been under enormous pressure from advocates and activists for the Haitian community, the Human Rights Commission, and the mayor of New York City, Mayor Bloomberg. In a statement issued by Take-Two and Rockstar Games, the game makers offered their "sincerest apologies to the Haitian people and Government of Haiti for any offense that may have been caused by statements made in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City."
The statement continued: "In creating the game, it was not our intention to target or offend any group or persons or to incite hatred or violence against such groups or persons... Accordingly, we will remove the objectionable statements from future copies of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City."

  14. But wait - there's more~!

Something that most of us in the industry are aware of is how games are 'rated' and how this is 'enforced by the retailers and parents. The ESRB (for one reason or another) gave Dead Man's Hand an [M] (Mature) rating, while other games that displayed wholesale slaughtering were given [T] (Teen). Yes, we were pissed, and after a couple weeks of arguing, we finally were bestowed a TEEN, with promises from the ESRB about how they are re-talioring their format and descriptors, to make all game ratings more accurate, fair and easily understood.

    But does that matter??

The following paragraph is a quote from the eighth annual MediaWise Report.

This survey clearly shows that M-rated games are very popular with boys, that they are easily accessible, and that many parents don't understand the ratings and are unaware of the content of the games their children play.

The implications of this large survey show that retail enforcement and parent education need improvement. Parent education, however, is not enough if they do not understand the need to observe the ratings. Parent education about the ratings need to include the answer to the question "Why pay attention to ratings?"

    'nuff said.

  16. Apparently this isn't enough for some people, and they want all copies with the 'offensive content' removed from shelves immediately, and not sold again until the 'updated' version comes out. Kudos goes to Wal-Mart who ain't takin' none of that, and will continue selling GTA, at least until Take Two gives 'em a different version to sell.

Is it just me, or is there a growing need to have parents take a parenting class and have licenses stating that they are responsible parents? Buddy Christ, these type of things piss me right the hell off.

A good solution for this would be a reduction in the workweek. We should all work 4 10 hour days and have Friday Saturday and Sunday off to take care of our children. Hell, most companies see that their workload slips after Thursday anyway.

  19. well now sentrosi...they can't do that see...they have to keep making the $$ so they can buy the kids the new bmw...responsiblity lies with the parents...know your children...know what they are doing...know their friends...and don't let them think they are your friends...they are your children and you don't have to pander to their every whim and desire...needs yes...support yes...love yes....but...what do i know...i don't have kids..

True. My wife and I have already discussed how we're going to raise our kids. I think that's the #1 thing most couples do not do when they are expecting. Both parents need to have a gameplan when the kids come along so they can both be evenhanded in raising the kids.

The thing is, is that most people get married for all the wrong reasons, and thus the 50/50 chance of a successful marriage.
