Remember how my husband was laid off from work? He's the only one who knows their code extensively.

Well, they keep calling, wanting him to do contract work for them. He agreed to do it yesterday for $100 per hour up front only because he wanted to help make his friend's code work so his friend, who doesn't have another job lined up, could get paid.

Then their company stock goes public, which means salaries are public. So, some of the people involved were curious. Low and behold the very month Brad's entire office was forced to take a 10% paycut and they laid off a large group was the same month their CEO gave himself a huge raise bringing his salary up to just under half a million per year. Brad's group lived with this pay cut and no raises for 2 years.

So, of course they called again today and I told him take no less than $200 per hour now. They said they would pay the $200 per hour. He said no. They disgust him.

    <3 Brad.

  2. do I hear $300? going once, going twice........

    How bout 1k per visit?

P.S. I hate CEO's, Period.................. Generally, overinflated attitude, work for shit, when the shit hits the fan, and think the world belongs to them. All this coming from an MD too. :)

At least he isn't waived by money.

I would have jumped at that. :D

Yeah. He can turn down the money in a heartbeat.

The problem now is the one guy left in the office full time has no idea how to get the rest of his stuff to work. He's a hardware guy. He called brad and pretty much begged him to help because he has an upcoming show.

Part of him feels relieved to be away from those dirtbags in their corporate office, but part of him feels guilty about having to tell this friend no. Brad's the kind of guy who helps people. Hes the one all the neighborhood kids bring their pieces of old wood to and say, "can you help me build a ramp for my skateboard?" and Brad drops what he's doing and helps them.

  5. :). Sounds like a good guy. Tell him to stick that company as much as he can though... that is one situation where an eye for an eye definately DOES apply... :).

  6. Shit.

If he was offered 200 an hour? man. I get 9 dollars an hour. for 1 day, I'd make more money than my entire month of work!

  7. Yeah companies are doing really crappy things to their employees now days. :(

At the same time, its not a good time to be an out of work programmer :(

Yes, Rayzer. I think his former employer was counting on him not being able to find work and figuring they could get him to do this contract work for them after laying him off so they could save some money by not paying him full time salary.

    He's with IBM now.

  10. I sometimes really hate the IT business... make that most of the time. Its a very similar environment at my job. The CEO's fly around the world first class, stay at top hotels, spend tons on themselves out having fun. And who pays? The employees. They lay off a few ppl and increase the work load on those who are left.

Good for your husband for sticking it to them. The bad thing is, its not really gonna to hurt the CEO. He's making half a million a year running a company into the ground. Whats he care if it falls apart.

  11. Kim - I understand Brad.
I do. It's not about 'sticking it to the company'. It's not about the money. It's about...
Peace of Mind, being true to your love ones and yourself. It's more than that.

    To mis-quote a song -
"Live. Live twice as long, love twice as hard, but brother don't do no one wrong."

PS - Are you effected by the FLOODING at all?? I saw a flash of it on the news and wondered if that was in your area...

I say, do the code, collect the money. The CEO will not really get hurt, worse case he will opt out with his stock and retire early leaving your friend there with no job, no money and no software.

The only think that hurts a company is the loss of cash, tell them how much you want, paid half now, half on delivery and code it.

It's been extremely wet here and the mosquitos are horrendous this year...big fat ones the size of hummingbirds the likes of which I've never seen before. Feels like they're trying to insert a straw in your arm. West Nile is here.

We're on fairly high ground so I haven't seen any flooding in my town, but I'm sure the lake areas are filling up. We've had drought the last couple of years so we had lots of room in our lakes for water this year.

    ...................................................................................
...and Full Otto, you make a good point. Brad does feel like he's hurt a friend but he's so disgusted with this company that he's relieved to be out of there. Hanging around doing jobs for them would mean he has to put up with them indefinitely. He doesn't even trust that their checks for contract work will clear the bank. He made them pay him up front last time and immediately deposited their check.

See, the real clincher is that on the stock holder's report, they blatantly lied. They said they had a hard time keeping their development staff out here due to competitive employers in this area...implying their dev team quit. They laid off their dev team.

His heart is broken. He has to believe in his work. I know it sounds crazy, but he's that kind of guy.

  14. I'm glad you are proud and suppoting your Husband Kim.
I've gone through a similiar situation.

...When Oed was promoted and took over my spot at Activison, he called upon me for assistance. I gave. I didn't give all, but because of our friendship, he asked, and I gave.
Had it been anyone else at Activision, even the President, offering me a huge sum of money, and to 'make good' on what they owed me -
    Royalties,
    Back pay,
    Raise,
...and more, I still would have said "No."

I don't know who said this originally,
"Morales are what gets in the way of preventing us from doing what's right."

    Funny juxtaposition that.
