Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Mignonne, 1 Jan 2006.

  1. Help?

I have a motorola 5100 Modem. What router should i be using to compensate for the slowness between modem and the router. we are using a netscape one now on the network, is there a better combination???

alot of times it makes me drop and stuff and hubby asked if i would post something here for some professional input from you guys :) cause your all so savvy at this sort of thing :) (ya i am always telling him how awsome you guys are)

  2. There really isn't any "slowness" between a modem and router - just a less efficient one or the other. If you are being dropped, you need to find out if the modem is loosing it's connection to the internet, or the router is flubbing up and dropping connection in either direction (talking to the modem or talking to the user(s) ). Then concentrate on the device having the issue.

Many times firmware in these devices is flawed and updates to them can cure problems such as this. For example, Mani just found out that the model of modem he was using was outdated and his cable company was configuring for newer models - thus causing issues with his current modem. He bought a newer modem which was more compatable with his cable companies configurations and he is now better. Here a firmware update couldn't have solved the problem, but the idea is similar - outdated stuff can be bad.

There shouldn't be any issues of communication between a modem and router however - it's just a simple ethernet connection and can't be better or worse between specific devices. Thus it's not a matter of finding a pair who "play well together" - there is no such thing. If you are being dropped, it one device or the other causing the problem - not the communications between the two devices.
