This is Russia we are talking about here. I doubt they care, sadly enough.

I feel for the people in that country. The people were kept uninformed for so long, as an outsider looking in it seems that many had no choice but to live the way they did, now they have so little in resources to clean up the mess and move on from their past.

I spent 11 days in a small village in the Ukraine a few years back. When we arrived in Kiev, it was like we had stepped back into the 50's. The USSR had simply put the brakes on any social development at all to pour money into the Soviet cold war effort. The USSR basically economically, and in natural resources, raped every country they held control over at that time - the Ukraine being one of them.

It was pretty sad. The village I mentioned was named Lu'Gansk (think that is how the english spelling comes out). They were actually paying some people, in a smaller coal mining town north of there, their wages in cases of vodka rather than actual currency.

I met an older woman (who I later adopted as my "Babushka" or grandma) named Ala who had two sons in the Soviet army. One was dead, but she never really said how he died; I kind of think it was in Afghanistan in the late 1979 invasion. She was living on a government pension of what equaled (in Ukrainian Grivna) out to about 10 US dollars a month.

My friend just adopted two russian orphans. she said they were of the age where they were just about to be moved to another orphanage for older children where they would have been fed only every other day. She had them for a month on some kind of spend the summer with an American family thing they had going. She fell in love with them and it was hard when they were sent back home. She fought really hard to make them a permanent part of her family. She feels she snatched them up just in time and now they live on her farm. She's a single mom and she and her kids gave up a lot of amenities such as television and internet so they could afford the adoption.

  12. Who would clean it up?

    Where would it go?

I think I read something a while back about how nuclear waste was being contained in black glass. It was a long time ago so I probably have it all fuzzy in my mind. Containment seems like a logical interum solution until we find a way to turn it into something less harmful.

Seems like a world problem to me, not just a local issue for russia. <3

  14. I wouldn't want my tax dollars going into a project like that. Its to the point now that monitoring it constantly and moving people out of contaminated areas are the only practical actions.

I don't know how much it would cost but I do know I have children who have to live on this earth after I'm gone. <3
