Music playback "skips"

  1. My best guess would be that your sound card is dying...

Speaking of computer problems... I just installed my nvidia 680i motherboard and for some reason it only supports two sticks of 512 mb RAM. When I put a third and fourth in the motherboard it gives me the C1 error (bad ram) and won't even boot to bios. I've tried switching the ram around but no matter what combination, if more than 2 sticks are in, it gives the error. Could it have to do with voltage? I don't want to mess with voltage unless I can confirm thats the problem. Don't need to fry my RAM :D

  3. Anyone know if Marsman is still lacking internet? I bet this is a problem he can tackle easily...

  4. No go Sentrosi. I read that thread awhile back. It almost seems like DIMMs 2 and 3 (the black ones) simply refuse to accept RAM. I can do any combination of ram in 0 and 1 (the blue ones) and it will boot fine, however when I put one in the black slots C1 error runs rampant. I'm getting 2 sticks of 1gb RAM to compensate for now and keep my 2 gigs of ram, seeing that I want to upgrade to 4gbs of ram sooner or later. Hopefully someone will find a solution to this problem, apparently a lot of other people are having this same problem with their second set of RAM being installed.

  5. Who said I'm lacking Internet? Lacking good solid internet, maybe, but a little internet is enough. I concur with the idea of a dying sound card.

With Lord of the Rings Online beta, I had terrible chop in audio - never had it on any other software and still didn't but chop in that game was unbearable. I tried removing and re-installing drivers - switching to the on-board sound as primary (was actually 500 % worse).

During my last hardware setup, I accidentally plugged my speaker output into my sound card's sound-out jack and blew up its output amp. Since this card is pretty much useless to me now, I physically removed the card from the system leaving my on-board card as primary. I expected the audio chop was going to be horrible but much to my amazement, sound was flawless with absolutely no hint of chop at all. Obviously despite no other symptoms on any other piece of software, my sound card hardware must have had some sort of problem as physical removal made the difference.

The moral of this story is that you can't always just software switch devices to diagnose this kind of problem. Try un-installing the driver, pull the card, and leave the on-board driver as primary and see if the problems goes away - if it does, it's a hardware problem with the card.

  6. Unfortunately, this problem is occurring on my laptop. I can't just pull the sound card. I, too, have the LOTRO beta installed, however, if my memory serves me, this was occurring before LOTRO.

Are there any other tests you can suggest for this laptop? Should I just uninstall the driver and reinstall it and see what happens?

Yes, go into device manager and remove any sound devices and let them redetect. When it does update with the most recent drivers.

  8. Well laptops are tougher - if it's hardware, then your kinda screwed unless a usb card works ok. I'd agree with Hamma at this point, - strip out all the stuff - let it re-install with the latest drivers and see what happens. About the only other thing you could do is a total reload of the OS if that fails - beyond that either and external card via USB or send it back for MB replacement.

  9. Sad day.. not what I wanted to hear.

In device manager, I have quite a few things listed under the Sound, video, and game controllers category:
    Audio Codecs
    Conexant High Definition Audio
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
    Video Codecs

Should I uninstall ALL of those? The only driver listed on hp's website for my machine is the Conexant High Definition Audio driver.

  10. bumpage. Just bringing this topic back into the light after being out of the country for a month. Any new suggestions?

  11. Another new item I've noticed. Apparently, the sound doesn't skip while playing movies. I've played a few videos on GoogleVideo and a few vids on my computer and the sound doesn't ever skip. What does that mean?

  12. Does anyone have any other options for me to follow up on? If not, I'll have to start the process of mailing this back to HP to get it worked on.

Don't forget... for some reason, the music in videos works FINE, it's the music that are music files that don't work well. ANY help? I really don't want to mail it back.
