Ok, I had a great time sparring tonight but my arms look like I'm suffering from leprosy with all the brusing setting in. Every key I press makes me feel like I'm going to seize up with the tightening knots forming in my forearms.

The sad thing is I had my gear on.... I'm the smallest one out there and darn...I never feel it while I'm sparring. I even break out into laughter quite often because I'm having so much fun.

The good news is I blocked almost everything. WoooHoooooo! Ouch.

I am doing the blocking without touching! heh heh, we spend a lot of time playing "tag" where you spar and don't let the other person touch you. I get paired up with Mr. Torres, he is incredibly fast (20 years old) so I usually get a boot to the head. But I do have a few bruises from last night, my wife was paired with me and she is still lower rank and she can't judge distances very well yet and we where doing fake round into side kicks. To say the least, a few side kicks made very good contact (since where where supposed to be "open" for our partner.

But I still feel good even with the bruises!

We do no-touch sparring sometimes. For classes that don't require a hogu. You can't do full contact all the time or everyone will constantly be injured.

We also do "kick butt" where you use sparring footwork and you work on timing your defense kicks by kicking each other only on the butt with roundhouse kicks and sliding back and stepping back defense roundhouse kicks.

We sometiems do "slap butt" sparring where you slap each other on the butt just like the above kick butt, but with hands. It's always hilarious to see the frightened pre-teen boys get paired up with a girl on this one. They lose every time!

Yes, I've had to spar the white belts with their knees and elbows. haha! It's great that your wife is getting into this with you. I've tried to get my husband to join me but he's just not interested.

Never done the slap butt sparring, that sounds interesting! We do flag sparring sometimes (you have 2 flags hanging from your belt and you try to take one of theirs while they try to take yours) makes for a good time, teaches you to block and help with seeing opportunities.

We did grappling last night, that is always fun and interesting.

  9. I do slap butt sparing with the wife whenever she'll let me :D

  10. I remember getting paired with someone in our class that was more advance than I. He was a kicker. After 5 minutes he never 'touched' me (ok - my shins hurt a lot), and I got one *very* solid side-kick on him. We never really did a winner-loser assessment afterwards, but I get the feeling that in the long run, I was in more pain than him~! :)

Kinda glad that we don't do that many kicks in my class (just enough to know how to defend them). My arms are constatly brused from class...should be doing soft blocks, but after a few hundred, and a couple that did not go as well as they should, things get brused.

Being that I am tall, I get the other goon sized guys to spar with...most of them do not fully understand there reach. We are supposed to get 'close' but pain makes me block better (grin).

What style do you study Queen? (I knew at one point, but forgot)

  13. The best part of sparring is fighting that white belt who has no clue what they are doing, so you're like, "I'm be'en nice, just going to take it easy on them" and they're like "WHAM! FULL FORCE RIGHT IN THE JIMMY!"

    what he sez

    I study Taekwondo.

I don't have a jimmy, but there was a woman I had to spar the other night who wasn't familiar with her distance. She moved in too close and kneed me below the hogu (which is illegal in the sport).

You have to make your opportunity to score by tricking your opponent into creating an opening with a fake or combination move most of the time.

Pump Monkey, someone who throws a lot of kicks they can't score with isn't considered skilled in the form of martial arts I study...although i'm sure you had a lot of bruises from that guy. If you threw fewer kicks and actually scored against him, you would be considered more skilled.

The most highly skilled fighters throw suprisingly few kicks but score with a higher ratio of them.

Why kick someone in the arm or elbow? Aim is good!

  16. Kicking someone in the elbow hurts like a mother trucker.
