Vitamin D deficiency. I mentioned to some of you I have migraines and was suprised to see how many gamers (and artists) suffer from migraines as well.

Thank goodness my best friend is a dietician. She promised she'd help me with this and I told you guys I'd share the info.

It all started several months ago when I had a stroke. I didn't want to believe it was happening to me because I'm too young for that. I don't have high blood pressure; I'm not overweight; I don't have high cholesterol. So, I got up that morning and pretended everything was normal. If I could fool everyone else, I could convince myself, too, that nothing really happened.

A few of my friends noticed I was talking a bit wierd (slurred speach) and my hands weren't in sync when I did some typing. My tongue and mouth felt a bit strange but still I continued to pretend nothing had happend until about 2 weeks later I read a post by a friend. Actually, it was her daughter posting for her about her stroke. A TIA is what she called it. I googled that and it scared the hell out of me. A much more serious stroke was probably on it's way so I immediately went to my doctor who brought up my history of silent migraines with visual aura, which is a serious stroke risk.

Now I realize all the headaches I thought I was feeling on the right side of my brain really were in my head...they showed up on the MRI! :p~

In my blood work it turned up that I had a severe iron deficiency and suffered from iron deficiency anemia....another very serious stroke risk.

My dietician friend kept telling me she was absolutely positive I have a vitamin D deficiency because of my migraines, but the test the neurologist did for vitamin D came back normal. Turns out they ran the wrong test. Apparently a lot of doctors run the wrong test. They ran a test for "1,25 dihydroxy vitamin D" and what I actually needed was "25 hydroxy vitamin D". I had to make a special request for the proper test. The tech in the lab told me the first test was much more thorough and that I was just wasting my time doing this second test. The nurse called me a few days later and said she was suprised that my vitamin D level was 14. Severely deficient. My friend had been right all along.

So, the good news is my best friend assures me she will rid me of these horrible migraines and strokes with her favorite medicine in the world. -nutrition.

It is suspected that around 50 percent of the population in the US has a vitamin D deficiency right now. I urge you all as gamers who never see the light of day to please have your vitamin D level checked because a deficiency in vitamin D is linked to these horrible things:

    Migraines
Multiple sclerosis and many other autoimmune diseases
Cancer <--- 60% reduction in cancer rate for people given D supplements
    Depression
    Diabetes
    arthritis
    high blood pressure

It's converted to a hormone in your body that supports your muscle function, brain function and immune system. Trust me, you need it!

  2. *HUGS YOU ALL UP* Thanks Sky for sharing this information. It is very much appreciated. I am glad to hear you are on track to getting rid of your headaches and that you have such a great friend to take care of you.

    *hugs*

Thanks, war. I was really scared for a while and completely exhausted for many months but am definitely feeling better now.

I hope you guys go get your vitamin D checked! (except for throney, he is excused since he spends all day in the sun. :p~)

    Sky,

Thank you very much for sharing this info and elevating my awareness. Sounds like your friend is gonna take good care of you and I'm glad.

  7. Glad to hear your ok Om. Pretty scary stuff. There are plenty of folks in the hospital I work at that don't recover from strokes. If you feel your having another one in the future, get oxygen as fast as you can. It will help eleviate the damage strokes can do. It might even keep you from getting hurt at all.
No worries about vitamen D here. Thanks for the info! I should stop smoking though.....

yes, thanks! I don't plan to hide if it ever happens again and since I've been taking supplements, I'm feeling much better.

Something like this is a real eye opener. It made me prioritize my life better, really take notice if relationships are healthy or not and fix or eliminate bad ones and to realize when there is simply nothing there to begin with.

  9. Good plan, live life! The end game isn't all it's cracked up too be. LOL. Golden years my posterior lol.
