Bad enough I get up to the news this morning.

(Actually I was hoping it would be a total dud and am still not hearing if it was a real nuke or just a really big conventional bomb they are trying to pass off as one.)

But now I am having to listen to dip wads making comparisons to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I just can't believe the total ignorance. Seriously. Crap like this:

"Person 1> A few days into the invasion of Japan, invasion plans did not list the troops who had invaded on D-day because it was expected they'd all be dead. Imagine how many Japanese civilians woyuld have died in this fighting as well.
Person 2> Except that General McArthur, amongst many others, held that a settlement and surrender was likely even before the bombs were dropped."

Can two people have a more asinine conversation? Can misinformation be spread any faster?

Sorry. Dad was in WWII. OK that part I am not sorry about. I will never forget the old sailor who ate at our restaurant in Texas. Helluva nice guy. Never paid for a meal on orders of my dad. When questioned, he always said the same thing, "He was at Pearl".

At 8 years old, that statement meant nothing to me. They were both long gone when I realized the enormity behind it.

Now to read some chuckle-head trying to revise what was going on, ARRRRRGGGGGGGGG. I gotta go put some flowers on some graves this weekend.

OK. I am done for now.

My dad was Army infantry, flame thrower trained, and in Europe waiting to go to Japan for the invasion. They dropped the bomb, my dad celebrated. He was happy about it...

  3. Did you know that japan was almost invited to a Nuke demonstration, thinking they would surrender when seeing it.

After deliberation it was decided to go ahead.

I realized while watching the news tonight what the problem actually is.

A lot of people don't understand what an ally is. They honestly don't understand what these treaties mean.

Yeah, that's a fairly ignorant statement -- there was never a ground invasion of Japan during WWII, so the Allied forces were never "a few days into" it. There was a fairly large aerial campaign which resulted in the destruction of about 60 Japanese cities, and ports and major waterways were heavily mined, but that was the extent of Allied invasion until Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There were certainly plans drawn up for an invasion, that's just good military strategy. I've never heard anything about those plans not listing the troops present at Normandy, all I know about was that 1.2 to 4 million casualties were estimated, as well as several million Japanese troops.

MacArthur supposedly did say something vaguely like that, though this is a poor paraphrasing. At the time the decision was made to use an atomic bomb, the Potsdam Declaration had been presented to Japan, which called for "the unconditional surrender of all Japanese armed forces", with the alternative being "prompt and utter destruction". (The complete text of the declaration is here, it's an interesting read, and not very long.) Emperor Hirohito had responded with a conditional surrender, the large condition being the preservation of the Japanese imperial structure.

When asked about the decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, MacArthur reportedly did say that he thought that it was militarily unnecessary, as the war could have been ended earlier if the Allies agreed, as they later did anyway, to the preservation of the institution of the emperor. I believe that this report of what MacArthur said was secondhand from a consultant to the General during the later occupation, I don't think there's a record of a direct quote.

I suppose the larger question is whether Allied forces were justified in using nuclear weapons against Japan. Fair warning was given, along with an opportunity which allowed further destruction to be avoided. The opportunity wasn't taken, and the destruction of two cities was the consequence. I suppose that any decision of such magnitude will always be questioned due to that magnitude, which is as it should be, though I think in this case the justification was probably there. The planned ground invasion would certainly have caused more widespread destruction and loss of life on both sides.

When I see things like this about who said what, and did what, it always comes down to..it's been done.

But another thing always comes to mind, especially in our present times. We hear all the time "Violence solves nothing".

Funny, two seriously violent things ended a world war, beyond a doubt.

We as humans will always prey upon each other, until one is so much more violent than the other.

The US has been laid back in their fight against these cowards, using conventional bombs and such, so the cowards still go on. Yea, we can't go making another country a parking lot because of other countries feelings, so we don't. So the cowards think "we have them where we want them". They attack civilian targets, we attack military targets. And they are right.

What is the solution? Besides wholesale violence against countries that harbor these cowards, nothing. And they know that.

So while they kill indiscrimantely, and we kill militarily, with some collateral damage, they will always win.

Now, North Korea, that is a huge quandry. I bet most there don't want to be there. And those that do aren't doing suicide bombings like these other cowards. They just join the military. The powers there want to control their people. Dude in charge, that Kim Sung Il or whatever, knows he couldn't get a chick with that hairdo if his people were free, so he is worried!!

He probably is thinking he would like to take over the US...we have hot chicks here...and until he can actually defeat us, must put on a brave front, just in case any hot American chicks are watching!!

He probably has advisors telling him they could take the US out, like that Baghdad Bob dude..."We have seen no Americans"..while we were looking him in the eye. Gotta love that dude...he could be on "The Last Comedian Standing"!

But it all comes down to this.....serious violence and end it, or just some mediocre violence here and there and drag it out.

In these cases, talking will never do anything....nor will "Go to the Bad Zone for 5 minutes Jimmy". Sorry Super Nanny, that ain't working here.

Serious Violence, it may not solve the big problem, but keeps humans from making more stupid choices, and if they survive, gives them a chance to reflect on their choices.

  8. We had to drop the bomb not to end the war but to show the world the total destruction these weapons deal out. If the US had not done it, I fear what would have happened.

Otherwise there are some companies working on artificial organs that will probably be the next big thing. I seem to remember one was an artificial liver.

Now with that said I need to go back to figuring out how to pay my mortgage.
