Yep, serious crosswind will cause them to have to crab in like that. We used to just hang on when the C-130s would land in England. Sometimes it would be so bad they would hit at a slight angle and snap around... fun stuff.

  2. A friend of mine told me once that as he was landing at O'Hare, he was sitting mid-section, looking out the window and the wind was so harsh, the plane buffetted and the wing 'smacked' the ground so hard a shower of sparks erupted from the contact.

And this was before the plane wheels touched the ground...

What's fun is when you're sitting in the radio operators seat on a P-3, which is right behind the pilot, and you look out your window and the runway is perpendicular to your point of view. That's the best.

We were landing in South Weymouth for a TorpEx in the middle of winter. Needless to say the weather up there gets pretty damn windy.

I remember flying into Chicago on my way to Germany, was on a 727 I believe, and looking out the window. We were coming in sideways, then just before touch down dude straightened it out....very smooth landing. I was impressed!

I've flown the MS Flight Simulator...landings are hard as hell. I would usually crash.

Did manage to land on a carrier at night though...I think once or twice, with a small twin engine.

Did a barrel roll with a 747 jumbo jet. Almost didn't make it. You lose lots of altitude real fast!! And I didn't have the stress option on...doubt it would have held up.

  5. That was one of many landings that used to take place at Kai Tak do a google search, I was amazed at the approach that these guys flew 747's in.
