Problem with a router...?

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Ir0nRaven, 11 Aug 2003.

  1. my friend had a Linksys wireless router (SN: C276035E275) and he tried to update the firmware on it. I don't know how, but he managed to screw it up. It doesn't work at all. If you plug it in, you get power, but you can't go to 192.168.1.1 to change preferences or anything.

Any suggestions? He said that if i could fix it, I could have it. That'd be nice :)

Ditch it!! Linksys seem to have a lot of trouble. We were having lots of problems with linksys hardware at Wolf's at the saturday lan.

D-Link or Microsoft do fine, and have proven to be more reliable.

Hold the reset button in for more than 5 seconds will reset it back to factory defaults (if you haven't done that already) and then power it off and back on.

Most of these home routers have problems do to people not knowing what they are doing while they are inside the configuration pages.

I have had nothing but good luck with all but one linksys router (lots of people have them)

The D-link is a good router as is a SBC. Not sure about Microsofts, never used it.

  4. Thanks Otto, I'll try that. What's weird, is that when you hook up 2 computers to it, they can ping each other, but they get no internet connection. Go figure?

Microsoft one is nice, I've never had to configure one. ;)

Our problems we had at wolfs, was about every half hour the router would lose the net. A power cycle fixed it, but it suxor when half the squad goes linkdead ;)

I'm using a CompUSA brand router I picked up from a friend, whose friend fished it out of the dumpster, works great...not sure what the hardware is, but the firmware seems to be something from some high end router or something...very odd...all updates i find for it point to that. Anyway, Cisco is good, yes, mmmm, cisco...anyone have 8 grand to drop on one for me? ;)

  7. Otto don't you mean SMC?:)

  8. Ive got a linksys as well the 8 port one

I havent had to many problems and i think most of the lag i get is from the game not the router.

  9. Heh. I'm not in this to buy a new router; I just wanted to fix this one. I didn't really want this to turn into a "which router is best" thread... oh well

    Yes, meant SMC.

As for the reason you can ping, the router is only one piece of it, the other is the switch. Are you getting IP address' from the router (DHCP) if so, you need to run a scan accross all your IP addresses.

Basicly if you get a 192.168.1.100 address assigned to you, then the router may be on a differant IP then 192.168.1.1 (someone might have changed it to 102.168.1.2 or what ever)

If you run something like LANguard network scanner and put in the whole subnet you may find the ip address of the router.

Also, go to the cmd prompt and type in ipconfig /all and see what you get if your using dhcp (the default gateway will be your router address)

If your not using DHCP, try setting your nic to use dhcp (write your info down if you don't already know it) then see if it will pick up an address (other than 169. rang) if it does, do the upconfig /all and see what you got.

    Just a couple of ideas.

  11. Sweet, thanks man. I'll try that out. I'm getting ip addresses assigned to me... we'll see if that works. Thanks again!

  12. Ok so i tried resetting it, and that didn't work. I did ipconfig /all, and that said that the router's address is 192.168.1.1 (i CAN ping that address, so i know it's right)

I think the firmware interface is just screwed up...

Also, when i plug the cable modem into it, the light goes on that says it has internet. There's just something blocking the throughput.

  13. when you try to browse to 192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer, does it prompt you for a password?

If it doesn't, then the Web interface of the router is messed up.

Which Model of the Wireless is it? You may try flashing the bios again and see if it fixes it.

  14. No, not prompted for the password. Interface is totally broken. How do i flash the bios again?
