Sad day for Minneapolis

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Bretta, 1 Aug 2007.

  1. I am sure most of you are aware of the bridge collapse today in Minneapolis. Fortunately, our family and friends were not on the bridge at the time. The worst thing for us is that Schrike will have to travel a different way to work. It is a scary thing to happen. Please pray for the survivors and for the families of those who lost their lives today.

We had a bridge collapse in Albany last year. Caused me a bit of a hassle as they were fixing it, but I'm just glad I was not on that bridge when it did fall. I feel for the families of the lost ones in Minneapolis. I hope that those that are still injured recover and I hope those that lost loved ones can reconcile their losses.

Amazing that a fairly new bridge like that could just collapse, I suspect someone is going to be paying for this dearly in the years to come.

Glad you and Shrike are ok, hopefully the toll stays where it is.

  5. its the shock of it .thats geting evrybody right now.but maiby shock is wut the US neads .its reaported that 40% of all bridges in the US has some problem.maiby the noledg of a mayjor interstate bridge over a major river can go like that whith a good inspectchon reaport in 2006 then maiby we have to rethink wut we are spending ower money on!!

but on a side not if I had my flying car like the big 3 promised in the 70s we wouldent nead bridges.

I used to wish that I could have a flying car. Then I drove past a car on the highway which was weaving back and forth across the road. I thought the driver was drunk at first, but I saw as I was going by that she was reading a magazine at 70 MPH. I don't think we need to add a third dimension of range of motion to that equation. :p

Nevermind dumbass news last night said the bridge was 4 years old... its actually 40. So yea there are tons of bridges out there that meet with this one in age or older.

Just think every highway overpass you go over, every stream or river you cross. All those bridges need to be updated at some point. I'm betting we won't fix them until they all fall :|

  9. of course i will add you to my prayer list....and i am so glad to hear that your family is well and accounted for

    wow

Glad everyone is safe up there....when i heard of this last night , was thinking of all the minnesota crew and hoping everyone was safe.

  13. Just wanted to let everyone know that Brian, me and our families are safe! They were not on 35W when it fell. I do have a cousin that lives by the U of M. (that's where the bridge that fell, for those of you that don't live in M.N.) She was very lucky to not have been on it.

Its really scary to think that this could happen. My hubby and I go on bridges everyday. So its really scary. Its so weird though how people are coming together. I work at Mystic Lake Casino. People would come through the doors taking about it. A lot of the people kept asking me if my family was safe. It was really heart warming that stragers even cared. Of course I said yes because they all were. It was just weird. Its really hard not to think about it. Its just depressing, I hate that I'm so caring, but I really hurt for the people who lost someone.

Anyways I'm rambling LOL sorry. But we are safe! Thanks for caring.

Supposedly about 12% of all bridges in New York State are unsafe.

Anyone have any extra bubblewrap? :p

Kath and shrike, I'm glad you and your family are safe. Sad about the loss of life.

  17. In Denver, there is an elevated section of freeway that is in pretty poor shape. Actually, I make a point of NOT to driving on that section of freeway. I'd rather drive alternate routes than be on that section freeway.

From what I've observed looking at the video and still photos, it looks to me like one of the columns concrete crumbled away. It looks like maybe one of the metal to concrete supports failed, and that started the collapse.

Migs & I are glad to hear that the folks we know in MN are all fine. And the victims are in our thoughts.

  18. Its going to be some time yet to determine what caused it. My theory is the combination of the construction crew, the weight of the standing traffic and the heat and humidity was the cause. Years ago I was with my mother and sister driving up 35W near downtown when the road exploded in front of us! It was frightening, but is not unknown to happen here in the summer as the roads are build to withstand extreme cold rather than extreme heat and the expansion of the concrete gets too much and buckles. Some of the reports from people on the bridge said it seemed to explode before it fell. This could be one reason it might do that.

I'm just happy that so far the loss of life has been much lower than originally anticipated. One of my friends at work has a friend that was on the bridge and her car fell into the water. She nearly drowned but was able to get out of the river alive. I saw her in some of the pictures...a small Asian woman sitting on a slab of concrete on the edge of the river. The horror will be with her for a long time. She says that she never wants to cross another bridge.

It is such an odd feeling. I have felt grief when hearing of other tragedies around the world, but this is personal. Anyone of us in the cities could have been on that bridge when it collapsed. I suspect that everyone in the Twin Cities is going to know someone who was on the bridge or someone who knew someone on the bridge.
