What is the story with this movie? I have noticed it is a top seller several places and I have heard folks talking about it. I know it is based off some TV show that was cancelled - what makes it so popular?

(I've never seen the movie or the show)

  2. I haven't watched the show "Firefly" - I guess it was on Sci-Fi(?) channel and got axed after a season or two. I guess it had a huge cult following where the buzz actually helped the movie Serenity get made.

But I loved the movie. I've seen it twice now and I hope they do sequels. It's got sarcasm, funny moments, drama (GAR!), action, suspense and a little bit of those "Whoa that was cool" things popping up throughout. Kind of like Star Wars (with Harrison Ford) meets Indian Jones meets Star Trek.

I plan on Netflix'in the Firefly series that is out on DVD - thanks for the reminder!

  4. I've been editing re-read my post stalker!:rawr:

    EDIT
In fact the main character reminds me a lot of Harrison Ford's Han Solo.

Sounds pretty cool - the few trailers I saw looked appealing so I may give it a whirl.

I have it as well as the original series on DVD (the original series was on Fox, and they mismanaged it enough that they killed it after half a season). I highly recommend both. Hell, my wife loves them, and she generally dislikes science fiction.

The premise is really interesting -- I don't think anyone has ever done a combination of science fiction and western genres before. To me, where it really shines is the character development and dialog. It's very well written, and there are some great humorous moments. It's also a very clever social commentary relating to government involvement in individual people's lives.

I think that the main character is who Han Solo should have been, were George Lucas better at character development and dialogue.

 to the series. I was lucky enough to know someone who had the series on DVD. I need to go pick up the movie tomorrow.

  8. The are going to create new shows for the SciFi channel. It was on NBC? for a while but they cut it. I saw thw show a couple of times. It had promise but as with most first season shows the writing was a little weak.

There was no problem with the shows. Fox, in their ultimate wisdom, decided to run the shows out of sequence. Think of watching Star Trek: TNG and watching the first part of the Borg invasion, then jumping over to the Ferengi attacks, then jumping back to the second part of the Borg invasion. Yeah, confusing as hell! If you pick up the series DVD they'll make more sense.

And I know that everyone's tastes aren't my own, but the writing for the series was top notch. The series came from the same person who did Buffy and Angel, and those went on way longer than they should have.

  10. Yes, Firefly was great, and Serenity is even better. I like it, which is wierd because I hate everything :/

  11. Serenity FTW.

I've got both the season and movie on DVD and love both. It's a shame Fox bungled this one like they did but I pray SciFi wises up to cult-like following the show now has and picks up more seasons. I'd hate to see this just go in a movie-mode.

  15. Firefly was an awesome show, and Serenity is an accordingly awesome movie.

Over the summer I rented all the episodes of Firefly and watched them in anticipation of Serenity. I'm glad I did too. The episodes are not to be missed.

  17. Firefly was just fantastic! I'd almost recommend watching the series before the movie (there were only 15 shows). I have the entire series and movie as well. One of the better parts of the series/movie is the music too. It's an unusual combination of sci-fi/western/comedy/adventure - it's hard to explain without experiencing it yourself but I just went nuts over this myself. It's just incredible good well written thought provoking and I'd recommend anyone watch both the series and the movie if you can. The movie had to tell the entire story of the series in a couple of hours - tough to do but they did a very respectable job - but to really appreciate the subtleties - watch the Firefly series.

    a 10 out of 10 ! :D

  18. Yea, some of the events in the movie really hit you harder if you've seen the series and then watch the movie.

I had seen the series when it was airing on fox, watched em all, but I just got the DVD set and the Movie at the same time. Spent all last weekend just watching one of the best shows ever!

One of the biggest stories about the series is just the absolute fanatacisim of the fans, watch the extras on the movie dvd and you'll see some of it.
