All of this is looking like PS2, pay for convenience... I'm not going to say P2W but what ever happened to games where achievement and rewards are important over who has the bigger wallet to get the early upper hand? All these ships and capabilities over the base "starters" are going to put a lot of people off.

The Starfarer is basically a huge cargo ship (think the Badger from Eve with expandable canisters) that can have a fuel refinery on board and, according to some people, you can land a ship on it for 'in-flight refueling'.

The M50 is a racer. There's going to be a racing element to this game too. So if you like the thrill of cutting a corner just shy of clipping your wing on an asteroid, then you get the M50.

Think about this. We get big enough to 'sponsor' a racer in the game. Our logo flashed on a Merlin as it streaks by the checkered laser flag winning "the Cup".

I think in the end it's important to remember, that unlike a game funded by a major publisher (who would interfere and potentially force the game out the door too soon for $$$), you're not simply "buying ships" that are going to give you some massive advantage over everyone, making you uber. You're funding the games development, and there's a certain risk you're taking over everyone else that just wants to wait until the end. So if all the pay for convenience didn't happen (which is little more than having a TRV vs a base cycler once PS2 launches; ships are simply "your gun" in this FPS), all the people who'd feel cheated they don't have all the stuff everyone else has; in reality wouldn't feel cheated because there'd be no game to play..

The reverse concept becomes true if the game were to fail, all that money lost (that MANY didn't pay) for no gain. So it's not simply just paying for a bigger gun, to gain any advantage, either in time or skill. Ultimately there's nothing you can get by pledging that you can't create/get in some way by simply playing. Achievements and such are a very personal thing, they may mean something to you but nothing to me; so some people don't mind paying for that convenience.

I don't see a problem with it at all. Some of the worst griping about this in PS2 just seemed like a lot of sour grapes from people who were unwilling or unable to put that investment forward. They could still get everything the other guy did, they just have to take longer to do it, in game. They just wanted everyone else to walk the longer path with them, because they couldn't/wouldn't..

At least in this case, it's not so much a publisher raking $$ in on purchases for profits, it's an indie developer having decent success and using the cash to create the game they set out to.

To each their own though I suppose. ;)

  7. Id like an M50, but I am at the limit on how much I am willing to spend on the game. Besides I need something to look forward to buying ingame.
