  1. Hey folks.

So I've got an extra 100GB laptop harddrive sitting here, brand new, never opened. (I've had it in a box for over a year.) My laptop currently has an 80GB HD in it, but it has a spot for a 2nd harddrive to be installed (it's currently just empty.) Now, I know that having two hard drives will add a bit of heat, and certainly make it heavier, but my laptop pretty much never moves now anyway because it already weighs 8.5lbs. Yeah, I know.

So, I was thinking about testing out Win7 when it comes out because I bought it for the $29.99 deal. The question then begins:

How can I install it on the 2nd harddrive as a brand new install that I can then boot from and run it independently from the original hard drive? I know about slave and master switches, and I can't figure out which switch it should be. I'd like for both HDs to be able to be turned on at the same time so that I can transfer files between the two, but I'd like to also be able to choose at BIOS start which HD to boot from.

    Any advice?

You're wanting to dual boot. Just Google "dual boot win7" and you should get a bunch of tutorials on how to set it up.

    It's pretty easy to do.

    Aye it's pretty straightforward.

As for master/slave you want the second one you install to be slave, that should make them both show up in windows.

  4. absolutely yes - been running Win 7 here on the PC on an old IDE hard drive for months now. You are given the option on what drive/partition you want to install onto at the time of installation. Couldn't be easier. Boot options for current system, Win 7, or Vista created automatically and are presented on powerup. Boot.ini is handled a tad differently in Vista and Win 7 so set the default boot os from Win 7 once installed. Enjoy! :D
