As much as I like the larger freighter style ships so far, I've steered somewhat clear of them because I'm trying to see what role they play, or how they'll do out in the void.

I see two basic frames here as I'm excluding the Idris as I doubt I'd see one for quite a while.

    Freelancer/Caterpillar
    Retaliator/Constellation

While the Caterpillar is similar in size to the Constellation, it's basically a similarly armed ship to the Freelancer, just larger and with more crew potential.

The retaliator is all missiles, while the Constellation is armed in a more balanced way. They seem more suited to being a "warship" than the other two.

The thing is, I get the feeling we'll see quite a few retaliators and even some gladiators out there and they're essentially built to take out larger ships; and I think many players out there know that and that's why they've bought them. At least in a fighter, I may not be able to go toe to toe with a larger ship, but I'll likely be able to get away from one; and fighter vs fighter is at least straight odds.

I guess as much as I'd like to get into a larger ship at some point, the presence of dedicated large ship killers like the gladiator and the retaliator give me a bit of pause. Is this kind of worrying too much? Maybe overestimating the potential for some of these ships?

  2. The connie to me seems better suited to defend itself, then take on any ship of larger size.

From what we have in game other then the turrets the size of the lasers, it mounts are size 1-3 (small), good for smaller ships going to be poo against anything it size or better, it will likely however make up for that with the class 5 turrets. Its missile load out appears to be more small anti fighter style missiles.

The Freelancer has 4 forward facing class 2 mounts that house size 3-5 lasers (5 being considered capable of hurting large ships.

Back to the connie as well, look at its engine size and maneuverability, that thing is going to haul ass and won’t be an easy mark.

:edit: nm found some weapon sizes

I guess I'm wary of flying a Constellation and having a 2-3 retaliator gank squad warp in and alpha strike me, as that seems to be the primary role for those bombers..

An Idris at least has a spinal weapon, and mostly anti-ship weapons, so it would at least stand a fighting chance..

I am hoping the Connie can at least give me the hauling capability to make a little cash, and yet the exit speed to run when I have to. It has enough weaponry that smaller pirate ships won't find me to be easy pickings to prevent "crimes" of opportunity.

For my preferred play-style, I think it will work well for me. I do expect to have some friendly fighters nearby that I could call if available - for a small "fee" I am sure.

  5. or i just look imposing in my retaliator as i fly with you........

  6. No worries Asp, that is what LTI is for. :)

If you get a big ship you won't be out in it all the time. Its also a big game. There will be gank groups I am sure, with tracker hornets, gladiators, and retaliators looking for easy prey but there will be groups out looking for those groups to.

I don't think it'll ever get so bad that you are constantly getting vaped everytime you go out in a big ship for a spin. Open space should be fairly friendly for the most part. The majority of the community I think will be a little less agro than it was in EvE where anyone you didn't know felt like a threat.

That is what I am hoping, Daleon.

Ya, once you've been scarred by EVE it's hard to relate to a space game any other way.. It's just gotten worse over the years too, nowhere is safe anymore in new Eden.

  9. I am curious as to your rationale behind this. Most games with <s>PvP</s> multiplayer end up going down the same road as EVE where people are jerk-offs just because they can be. I'm not sure I've seen any reason why that wouldn't happen here, so I'm curious because maybe I'm just as jaded as Asp and can't see why it would turn out differently this time.

  10. Because many of the people investing in this game are long time Chris Roberts fans. They are looking to live the sci-fi fantasy dream. I think there will be more of them than there are griefers but this is a twitch game. There is also a chance of there being a pretty big secondary market for players to make real money on this game which could draw all kinds of unsavory types.
