The Funeral

I went down to Fernandino beach for the funeral of my best friend's brother. This is the most unusual funeral I have ever been to.

Kevin died at age 38 of a drug overdose, leaving behind a 9 year old daughter named Jessi one week before he was to check in to a drug rehab he had registered himself for.

A dog was at the funeral. It just showed up. Noone knows who's dog it was. Jessi held the dog as she greeted strangers dressed in black giving their condolences. I think the dog comforted her.

It was uncomfortably hot when the service began. Butterflies suckled off of the flower arrangements that sat near the gray urn that held Kevin's remains.

Just as I felt I couldn't hold back my tears any longer, I heard a strange noise behind me. It was a large turtle as wide as a dinner plate. He was scraping his shell against tombstones as he walked by them, rolling over stones in his way, ripping out plants and chomping on them. He made such a racket it was comical. The turtle wandered back and forth behind us throughout the entire service.

It began to rain gently and I thought to myself how nice it would be to walk barefoot in the rain rather than being all dressed up for this funeral. There was thunder and the rain came down very hard. As I was running back to my car after the service, the soles of both of my shoes split open. My feet were soaking wet. I took my shoes off because they were useless. There I was, barefoot in the rain just as I had wanted.

There's more to this funeral, but you guys just wouldn't believe it. I will post it in private forum if you want to read that much. Just let me know.

RIP, Kevin. I hope your gentle soul feels no more pain.

You could not plan on a better funeral I would think.

It is one that will be remembered.
