They charged me $28 for a broken piece of twine left on my cart at Lowes

So there I am innocently shopping for garden shrubbery at Home Depot. I pick out two of the perfect shade-loving, fast-growing, evergreen holly shrubs for my landscaping needs in my neverending quest for backyard privacy. I painstakingly load these prickly, awkwardly large new shrubs into my vehicle, contorting them to fit under the roof of my van to drive them home. I unload them and place them where I want them in my yard so I can admire their beauty when I discover on my receipt that Home Depot has charged me $80 for each one of these $20 shrubs.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

So I loaded them back into my van, not without injury to my face, and returned to Home Depot to gasp over their mistake with one of their managers and have the $120 overcharge refunded.

3 days later I decide I can risk buying a few more shrubs... at Lowes. I mean, hey, I owe it to my neighbor for having handed two pairs of garden clippers to my kids requesting that they trim off all of the branches that hung in the way of our side yard path, which is next to his house. Where beautiful, 8-foot-tall shrubs once stood, I came back to find only 6-inch stubs left in the ground. My kids were really proud of their hard work. They felt they'd exceeded my expectations. <3 (as their mom, I did have to make them brownies for all their hard work because they are so adorable and all-In my *unbiased* opinion.)

So, I venture forth to Lowes for more shrubbery. I choose a red flowering camelia and a Leland Cypress. I thought they totalled a bit high so I gave the receipt a good look on my way out the door to discover I'd been charged $28 for what? I didn't see anything else on my cart. I told the cashier he'd made a mistake but he defended his own awesome cashiering skills.

He walked over and picked up a piece of broken twine that had been left on my cart by someone else and showed me that tt had a bar code taped to it so he'd rung it up!!! and OMG, it was *BROKEN*!!!! He charged me $28 for a piece of broken old twine!!!

I was a little suprised at how reluctant he was to get a manager to come and refund my money. Did he really think I wanted to purchase a piece of broken twine for $28? The manager was pretty sweet about it and even ran out to my car to help me load my two shrubs, which were really not that large and prickly. <3

Aren't moms great like that. Glad you got your money back, the fact that I know a bunch of cashiers at the local Home Depot the fact that the cashier was reluctant to put in any effort to expend any energy and had charged you for the broken twine is not surprising.

Hahahaha, that is quite an interesting story. Those garden center stores always have some crazy checkout thing going on. Either you risk doing the apparently fast and efficient "self-checkout," or take your chances in standing in line with crazy customers/cashiers (I have had my share of bad experiences at Home Depot). At least you were met with a kind and helpful manager.

  4. Broken twine for only 28 bucks! Put me down for three!

Well i'm glad everything worked out in the end - you should post some pics of the garden so we can all admire!

  5. You need to shop at our home depot, they are constantly undercharging us, forgetting to scan items, and such and when you try to be honest and point it out to them, they usually just shoo you out the door cause they are too lazy to fix their mistake!

  6. I'm not sure if that policy is present in the U.S but up here in Canada we have this law... if the object is badly priced and under 10$ you get it for free if it's over 10$ you get 10% off... (wich isnt bad if you ask me).

  9. Wow honey~!
    Forewarned is forearmed~!
If I ever shop at either of those places down south, I'll be sure to have my son wear his NASCAR store-specific gear for a shield (Tony Stewart = Home Depot & Jimmie Johnson = Lowes). I understand that wearing said material down south is like a badge of honor....

Of course, if I walked in to Home Depot wearing a Jeff Gordon baseball cap, even stating that he is my favoured driver - I'd probably get lynched~!
I'd have to wear the "Team Chevrolet" jacket my wife is planning on getting me for my B-day....

    ;)
