Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Praetor-Vong, 28 Jul 2003.

  1. Here is a machine I have parted together on a online store... What do you all think? Should I get it?

  2. Damn nice computer.

    Price = ouch :D

  3. Not the mobo to use if you are going to overclock. Plus, it supports serial ata, why not get serial ata hard drives?

Edit: Plus, why am I asking you here? I'll walk 30 feet and ask you...

Vong, tell your dad I've been very good too!

  5. I'm not sure that serial hard drives are available yet....are they? I know they MoBos are supporting them, but I haven't seen any on the market yet or reviewed.

  6. They are - I can get a sata hd's if I wanted to... costs about 30 dollars more /hdd. -Thing is, why go for sata when a normal ata hdd will do you just fine?

Personally vong, check out Asus's P4C 800 deluxe.. it's a good board. I have it in mine. Great if you want to o/c. Has a built in function that lets you o/c by '5' '10' '20' '30' percent.

It's a really good board. Take a look at Maximum PC.. they did a review and comparison of the board this month. Came out with some nice stats.

My question - Are you planning on making this a server?
Two 120 gig drives is a bit overkill I think. Shit, I have a total of 120 gigs worth of space, and I've only used like 1/4 of it max - that's only because the second (third partition) is my old 40 gig drive and I haven't formatted it yet.. lol

    Just lettin ya know.

  7. How'd you know me pops is buying the system?

  9. Vong, you know that T2 isn't going on the system. Itlooks good but I would get the serial HD. It's faster and doesn't have the issues of lost data like the normal drives.

  10. Yeah, it was in that thread, but I edited later cuz I didn't want to sound like a braggart.

Yes, after conferring with my cabinet committee, I will go Serial 150. After all, it's only $30 extra per drive. :D

  11. Full Otto

    Full Otto Chain Gun Madman

I have the Asus P4G8X motherboard myself, I like it.

I also have dual 120 gig drives (one drive is down to 40 gig free the other is around 100 free) I do video editing in my spare time.

Never to much drive space in my eyes!!!!

    Otto

  12. for your video editing, are you making dvds?
if so, i might wanna get wif ya

  14. IMO buying AMD chips is always the smarter option, mostly becuase you get practically the same performance for less money. The AMD compatble mobos are cheaper too :D

  15. I went to CyberPowersystems.com

Was difficult to find a mobo for the highest end AMD chip, otherwise I would have went for AMD.

Sata is to expensive at this time for size Vs price.

7200 rpm dives show almost no performance advantage and are more then $$ IDE. Imho, its not justified for the price.

10k rpm drives, are (last I looked at them) top doller for small drives. (ie: western digital's 36 gig raptor for 200-ish bucks, thats a nice 200+ gig 8mb cache IDE drive!), but for the gamer, are the best non-scsi performance drives out there. (again the raptor drive) I guess give credit where its do, but still not worth the buckage. Also, the raptor has an odd high pitched whine to it that is murder on senstive ears. Personal experiance in that dept. ;) (Advantage of working in a computer store that custom builds computers)

  17. /me agree's with jouster

SATA drives are way too expensive right now.

Oh also a good Mainboard to get is the ASUS P4C800. It has support for dual ddr and has seperated the memory clock rate from the CPU clock rate so its really good overclockin. I have it and am currently running the 2.4 ghz @ 2.8 ghz with standard cooling without any problems.

Oh and the deluxe board comes with onboard 6 channel sound, gigabit lan, 1 raid port, and 2 sata ports. so you could set up those 2 120's on a raid if'n ya wanted. :D

  18. I disgaree on the SATA. I got it for the speed and reliability of the data connection. Forward compatibility is a bit of a gamble of the SATA standard is somehow escewed in favor of something else, but if it remains the new standard, my SATA drive will be supported for some time to come.

As far as the mobo, I chose the ABIT Canterwood over the ASUS after some negative reviews of the ASUS at first, and have been happy with it. I might have chosen the Intel but I got impatient and ABIT was faster to market than Intel (Intel was first technically, but their production didn't nearly meet demand at first). The Intel gets great marks for stability and is actually a bit faster at stock timings than the other Canterwood boards. I also wanted IEEE1394 on-board for my iPod and the Intel doesn't have it

  19. Yes, but it is only $30 per drive to upgrade the Serial ATA for the same size.

That is for 7200 RPM drives I assume?
