Left knee story:

Playing Flag Football. Went to make the Barry Sanders cut, my cleat slipped and my foot twisted outwards. Since I had been using that foot as my plant foot I was exerting every bit of pressure I could there for the cut. When the foot lost traction, my leg collapsed and my foot rotated outwards. I fell back on the leg as the shin rotated outwards and the knee folded sideways. The sound that accompanied that injury will forever haunt my mind. It was the sound of a thick piece of celery being broken in half. The guys who were around me actually heard it also. ACL torn in two, with a tear of the meniscus.


Right knee story:

I was playing Ultimate Frisbee. I had gone up for a disc to defend and try and get the pick. One of the other team's guys jumped also slightly before me and was just a little higher. We were playing in the gym so as I started to jump I realized that if I continued that way, he would get bumped in the air and probably go end-over and hurt himself. I attempted to get out of his way and came down on my right leg awkwardly. It simply folded sideways. Always a unique thing to see! No noise, but the exact type pain as the left knee. I knew it as soon as I did it what had happened. ACL number two, this one with a bucket-handle tear of the meniscus.

 

Left knee '91, (of which that season my team was undefeated..), operated on '92. The left knee was done using a strip of the patellar tendon.

Right knee '98, operated on 2000. The right knee was a procedure using a harvest from my hamstring. (This one was the harder one to rehabilitate.)
