    From a moderate sci-fi fan, here are my top 5 TV series in no particular order....

    Babylon 5 - all already said
    Dr. Who - really the best of all!! my obsession for years.
    Alien Nation - cop show with aliens....way cool!
    Quantum Leap - Scott Bakula...no more to say :)
    Firefly - was a very good series that Fox never gave a chance

    Top sci-fi books....

    Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula Le Guin Best sci-fi novel EVER!
    Dune - Frank Herbert Only the first novel

    I am mainly a mystery/fantasy fan, so I haven't read alot of sci-fi, but Schrike does so I have tons on my bookshelfs. :)
