well I broke down and got it :D

Can some of you more experienced folk post some tips/strategies...... the last time I played civ was the original.

    questions (may add to later):

    1. when people are angry because it is too crowded, does that mean they need more stuff to expand the cities sphere of influence, or do you need workers to make more houses around the city?

    2. Does iron only come from an iron mine....... in other words, if there are no iron mines around do you just ahve to skip any units that require it?

    3. Is making an assault on enemies from the beginning advisable? I ended up with better technology than the computer opponents, but hey had so many units they got the best of me.

I keep building things that will increase the food support, the culture and the healthy aspects of my cities. This tends to make the influence spread and the city to grow faster. The Colisseum is big and the Theater to keep the masses happy. Building an Aqueduct is good too.
Once you are able to mine it if all your cities have been "networked" in other words roads interconnect them, if one city has the resource all cities get it. So when you begin sending out Settlers, make sure to park a new city next to a place that could potentially have iron or if you see iron.
This is probably personality based. I usually bide my time. Let my cities grow and watch my AI opponents. You will begin to see one get crowded out and he or she becomes weaker. I usually strike to liberate the people then. :)

But typically, at the beginning I am so busy fighting off barbarians I am not able to conduct any offensive moves. The barbarians do allow my units to build experience and get the bonuses for that.

Once I have started building granaries and gotten those completed, I usually go for a barracks for the experience it gives my military units.

Some other things I do - disclaimer! I am not an uber Civ 4 gamer! :)

    - I always try at the beginning to get my scout and warrior out exploring as fast as they can. This does a couple of things for me.
    1) It gets me gold from local villages
    2) It will sometimes get me an extra warrior or settler or scout
    3) I can see the lay of the land, so to speak, to be able to better tell which direction to grow

    - I crank out some settlers quickly (relatively speaking) to establish at least three cities within 10 squars of each other. I then set my workers on automatic improvement so they will begin the road networks and upgrades on the land necessary to support my cities

    - I usually try and get archers built fairly quickly as well for city defense against barbarians. The AI won't attack you for some time so your biggest threat is the barbarian gangs running around. If they manage to take a town of yours and they don't raze it, you can recapture it. (On this note, I usually set my custom game settings to "No City Razing". Yeah, yeah, it makes it easier, but so what?! :D )

    - I have found that building walls, while they may go obsolete with gunpowder, in the beginning they are crucial against the barbarians in some cases.

    - I try to plan my city growth later on so that I can pinch off cities of the AI that are close so that they will be cut off. I NEVER allow open borders. I don't want these yahoos traipsing all over my land. Because my borders are not open, I can potentially cut off a city of the AI and they will eventually rebel and join my glorious consortium due to my uber culture rating. ;)

    Hope these meager tips help!

While I'm still not sure if towns or farms actually provide health or happiness per se', I do know that:

Red face = unhappiness, which you can change by building things that produce happiness (Collisseum, theatres, etc), or in the case of monarch, stationing troops in your cities. Cities will get angry with you if you stay at war too long in certain civics. So sometimes there's no avoiding the unhappy face.

Green Face = poor health, which can be fixed by buildings that have the medical symbol in what they create. Other than that I don't know how to bring the healthiness of my city up if I've already built every building I can. Like I said, I'm not sure if building more farms or towns would fix that.

Yep, no iron mine means no knights, etc. If you know you're going to war (or about to) its something you should consider protecting with a decent unit if the enemy is near your mine, because they will destroy it to deprive you of the units you make with it.

If you don't have a source of iron near you, you an negotiate trade with another civ for a source of iron (hope they dont go to war with you), or it can be randomly found (I think) just by mining hill tiles.

Assaulting an enemy early on will stunt your growth.. But it can be useful if you're pinched between too enemies..

Red and I are in the middle of a team game, where we've been at war for hundreds of years now constantly with multiple civs.. All because in our previous wars with the persians (miserable backstabbing Cyrus! ) we never finished them off.. We conquered some cities and then made peace. And we paid for it by fighting with the greeks later (largest military power, but weak technology), only to find the Persians at our door again once we'd replused the greek invasion. The greeks had much lower technology than us before, so we felt we could hold our borders. Now that we've committed to wiping the Persians off the map, I look over and notice that the greeks are MUCH more advanced than they were previously. Just starting to take on the tech we have now, which means they'll be A LOT tougher to conquer now. If we had seen things through and wiped out the persians when they were weaker, Red and I would be in a far more secure state to take the fight to the greeks and their vile Arabian allies!

So yes, sometimes, taking out a potential rival quickly can be a good thing. It will slow you down dramatically though if you can't end it quickly.

You can eliminate frowny faces and green faces with certain buildings. Some technologies and buildings as well will eliminate those faces for good. I know for like the green sick face the Environmental tech with the Recycling Center building will ensure no green face.

For the frowny face there are certain buildings and technologies that eliminate certain conditions. Jails will give you a -25% against unhappy populace during wartime. The Theater, Coliseum, and maybe some others will lower population unhappiness.

Typically I build in this order (if no barbarians are lurking about):
    - Settler
----> Once the pottery tech is done
    - Granary
    - Barracks (Walls first if barbarians start appearing)
    - Archer
    - Walls
----> By this time your tech should be at a level that allows better buildings for happiness or health and for better units.

You know what really pisses me off...... and I know units get a city defense bonus...... but when a group of archers kill my cannons I yell!11! And the ones that get beat are usually my best ranked men too :(

  11. Manitou

    Manitou Old War Horse DragonWolf

Yeah, cannons suck for defense because they don't get a defensive bonus, if I remember right.

Typically, I will select a unit to guard my city and give them the Garrison bonus (you get experience straight away if you have a barracks there when you build troops) and then entrench them by clicking on the shield emblem. This grants them like +25% defense every turn they are in that status up to 100%. That way they are pretty tough.

Cannons are only good against city defenses and don't have much in the way of unit vs unit fighting. I found last night I was constantly losing fights against enemy units in open ground.. I figured the comp was cheating, until I realized, crossing rivers. Apparently if you attack an enemy after crossing a river you get a big attack negative, which was probably way I was losing a lot, even to units that were weaker than my knights.

You build your cities near rivers (so do the AI civs) and you usually don't attack until you're defending your city or attacking his, so you have to be careful where you move when you attack because the AI will definitely try and put obstacles between you and him.

As for why a musketeer shot down your cobra Mani? That kind of thing shouldn't even remotely happen, even with a unit entrenched in a city.

    That's just not right.

It's the basic roll of the die I am sure. I could see if maybe the guy was in a bell tower and is a crack shot like Sgt. Alvin York. :p

The cool thing is the added experience factor when your units survive engagements. You can customize what they are good at and make the units, if stacked, fairly complimentary.
