  3. Hmmm, I hate the idea of a homeland security. Everytime I hear about it, I think 1984. I just don't understand why we need to be so worried. Seriously, what are your chances of dieing in a terrorist attack? I don't know, but it can't be high.

I feel like we're not actually fixing anything. Instead we are creating a powerful organization, that will have access to information, that it would probably be best if no one had any access to. I dun know, but im not happy about homeland security at all :\

I think benjamin franklin said it best(not sure of the exact quote, but this will be close). Those that are willing to sacrifice freedom for safety, do not deserve freedom in the first place.
    Fling :D

    Bravo!

Now you get a cookie for being knowledgable in a time when 10% of Americans don't know where the US is on the globe.

The problem now are weapons of mass destruction. It doesn't have to be a the Bomb or germ warefare but a Dirty Bomb that is a normal bomb surronded by radactive material. The damage may be small from the first blast but after the radation takes hold then what is the toll.

I agree that more government power is not good but the Goverments first duty is to protect the us.

Fling is right in that we don't need more government, but what we do need is a more efficent government. The Office of Homeland Security is not an Orwellian step twords 1984. It's bringin togeather multipule agencys that all ready exist.

How can the ATF, FBI, CIA, Local Poilice, Coast Guard, and the INS do their jobs efeciently when they don't share any information? The lack of information being shared between these agencys is so well known that we see it in every Crime Drama we have ever seen. (Fedral agents pusing other agency aside, and not sharing information).

    Think about it like this....

What if you had to go to 3 diffrent Mcdonalds to get a Buger, Fries, and a Coke? Then when you get home you find out that you could have gone to a 4th McD's to get an apple pie, but it's too late for that now.

The office of homeland security allows you to get all you food at one place, and while your there not only learn about the apple pie, but to find out about Chacolte Sundays too.

    Hmm

    I'd probably go to Wendy's (Canada). :D

  8. or just not go to mcdonalds at all.

I think its ludacris to worry about this sort of thing. In the end, if someone really wants to activate a bomb, of any type in our cities they will. Tracking down all of the alqueda in the world won't help. We track them down, we kill them, thier sons are tought that their fathers were heroes. We still havn't fixed the problem, we've just prolonged it. All of this is unneccesary action to make people in general feel safer. It won't help.

  9.

    That and ED is hwat!

The need to replace their lunch time anchor chick, she is freaking ugly and bugs the hell out of me. I want to punch her in the face :p

Homeland security. Will it stop all terrorism? Of course not. But it should help with communication and should stop some. It is better than doing nothing. Whatever, I go on with my life. We will prevail in the end, one way or the other.

  10. I'm really surprised no one has gone into depth yet about the potential this has here to erode civil liberties.

  11. There is always potential for that.

It is a trade off, there is no other way. You give up civil liberties in exchange for a certain measure of security provided by a government. (Lets leave corruption and stuff out of this by now).

For example, I give up my right to come over to you house and shoot you in the head. In exchange the government says you are not allowed to do that to me.

So giving up liberties is no debatable, simply the amount you are willing to give up.

Would you give up internet privacy (let the government moniter your internet activities) if it would help catch terrorists. They are decisions we all need to make ourselves then inform our representative.

It is a very fine line we walk in this country. We value our freedom very much, but that places us at risk. I would argue that the majority of Americans would rather have 9/11 happen again than give up the freedoms needed to secure a 95% chance that it would never happen again. There is nothing wrong with that, Americans have been fighting, dieing, and bleeding for two centuries to keep those freedoms. It is a fine line we walk and everybody will have a different view of where the freedom/secuirty line should be.

  12. My freedom is worth an infinite amount of blood.

I don't believe in prevention like this. No good will come of it.

I don't believe in reducing freedom just to have the illusion of safety. This great airport security, which is hell to get through, isn't worth shit. People are carrying boxcutters on planes and who knows what else.

We need some suffering in this country. Americans are too soft and they fear everything. What's the new virus or unstoppable plague that will kill us all right now? What fears have the media fed you lately?

While we're fearing everything why don't we fear some witches? How about a cult? Or perhaps some doom styled demons? If you're gonna buy the terrorist package you may as well buy these to.

You're more likely to die in a car accident then get killed by a terrorist. You only get one life. I'm going to live mine to the fullest. If you guys wanna hide under the covers, in fear of the boogyman, than so be it but you're really missing out on some good beer. :D

  14. I'm not worried. The airport situation is bad, but from now on out, who will let the terrorists get to the cockpit? 5 on several hundred? They blew that wad on 9-11, there will be no more air liner hijackings in the united states.

read the text of the bill here

    http://www.hsc.house.gov/legislation/hr5710.pdf

    be warned its 484 pages.

and i'll post more as I see it.

  15. so far ive read to page 60, its still defining words. Several previous laws had words changed/omitted/inserted, and Critical Infrastructure Information is exempted from the freedom of information act, except when it will help a criminal investigation to have that information.

    I'm not that interest.

Just do what Israel does. Seal the cockpit off from the plane. You don't see any of their planes getting hijacked. :D
