You can't be bullied or manipulated into truely believing something. You can be forced to go to church, made to say things you don't mean, tortured, starved, bullied, made to be afraid...but there is a place inside of each of us that noone can touch. That is where I keep the only thing that is truely mine and mine alone.

  3. People are manipulated into believing stuff every day. Some become so enthralled with the manipulation that they become fanatics. Human beings are dominated by emotion. It is a gift and a curse. It enables us to put others before ourselves, but it also enables fanaticism. Not all religious people are infected with fanaticism, and they're not the problem. The problem *does* originate from the idea of religion however. The fanatics that surface and say "my religion is the right one, all of the others are wrong" are the fuse to the weapon that will inevitably end mankind. People like the woman in that Jesus Camp trailer. Hell, linking that site alone would have been the perfect counter-argument as to why I believe each and every religion in the world has just as much destructive potential as the next. I wouldn't call it an "isolated bad apple" either, because when you take hundreds of children and teach them to be "God's warriors", how do you suppose they will raise their children? And their children's children?

Sorry, but I won't let you pin this problem on Islamic extremists alone.

Also sorry if I can't let a dead horse die. But this is something I take very seriously. History repeats itself. I don't want to see a worldwide holy war with nuclear weapons.

Man you guys are always hijacking threads. This was simply saying that if someone out there wants to come in and blow my country up, whether they be Christians, Muslims, or fungus from Kai's toes, I will die fighting them.

Stop turning every thread into a religious thread. There is an enemy out there who hates the US. They want to kill Americans. You can believe it or not, but that doesn't stop it from being the truth.

    Sheesh...

  10. You can say it has nothing to do with it, but that denies the bigger picture of *why* this is happening. Religion is very much involved in this hatred towards the US. If these terrorists didn't have a god to die for, or weren't promised 72 virgins, would they still be blowing themselves and us up?

I've been reading around www.beliefnet.com and have gained a much better understanding as to why it is counter-productive to debate with anybody who uses the term "faith" as their supporting evidence. Reminds me of that little debate/flamefest that we all remember. Atheists base reality on tangible evidence. It is also important to note that atheists do not believe just because current knowledge says so, that something is absolute. Scientific evidence evolves every day. New ideas replace old, less accurate ones, just as DNA itself goes through trial and error to ultimately become the best suited for its environment.

Simply put. The more we find out about our universe, the more realistic it is to believe that divine intervention was not necessary in the creation of our universe. The God/Knowledge ratio is shifting in the favor of Knowledge with every new discovery. Little do you know, yours and every body else's God is shrinking. Faith was the theists counter to that undeniable truth.

So take what I say however you want. If you want to try and counter my point, do so in a new thread or in a PM as to not hijack Manitou's thread.

As for beliefnet.com, I highly suggest those who are genuinely interested in the pursuit of knowledge, and not afraid to question their core beliefs check this site out. To associate with people that have open minds about the universe (there are many kinds of atheists, most agree however that God is possible, but not probable.) is far more refreshing than associating with those who stubbornly accept one thing as absolute truth based on the self-justifying term "faith". Note that beliefnet is not entirely composed of atheists. It is a website that discusses all religions and religion in general.

Finally, refer to my sig for how religious people so easily and irresponsibly think their view is absolute.
