Ahh a year I remember well. We had a blizzard that year, nothing that really made the papers but our school was shut down for over a week. My father made an ice rink right before the blizzard hit, perfect conditions too (the weather has to be on a pace where it does not go over 10 degrees - This usually happens in late January early Feb) 100 feet by 40 feet roughly. We'd stamp down the snow, and add water. Rinse and repeat. After the blizzard hit, the snow banks around the perimeter were 5 feet high...perfect for knocking one of your buddies into.
I fantazied about being Gilbert Perrault scoring his 500th goal. Man those were the days.

Master of Puppets came out that year as well.
